    HERITAGE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

    ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL (PRESCHOOL - GRADE 4)

    POSITION OBJECTIVE: The major responsibility of the position is to lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the elementary building. This includes directing and overseeing the curriculum and instruction, in conjunction with the Academic Director, programs and activities of students, faculty and staff for grades Preschool to 4 to meet the educational standards required by the school and the school's accrediting agencies.

    QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS: The employee must be a Christian with an authentic and a mature personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who agrees and is in alignment with the HCS Statement of Faith, Charter of Core Values and Employee Covenant in both their professional conduct and personal lifestyle. The employee is committed to incorporating these qualities and standards in carrying out the calling to Christian education. The principal must be professional and approachable in appearance and manner, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to mentor, teach, counsel and motivate those within their scope of influence is critical. Other characteristics include a focus on servant leadership, the ability to cast vision, and be a team-builder who creates a stable, effective work environment. The Elementary Principal must understand the culture of today's elementary students and families, being fully aware of what is relevant to them. A wise and discerning spirit, with the ability and willingness to listen, are valued characteristics for success in this role, as are compassion, confidence and impeccable integrity. This employee must exercise discretion and sensitivity in handling confidential internal and external matters, demonstrating a high level of accuracy and trust. In addition, the ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the HCS community-at-large, including faculty and staff, board members, parents, volunteers and others is crucial to the success of this role.

    EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: An advanced degree in education or a related field, and at least five (5) years of experience in an educational setting are required. Leadership experience at the elementary school level is required.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Lead educational activities of the Elementary School (grades preschool-4), ensuring programs are in line with the school's mission and vision; direct implementation and development of curriculum.
    • Develop annual budget; oversee appropriate expenditure of funds.
    • Communicate mission, expectations and activities to the community through written and personal communications in a variety of venues.
    • Manage and evaluate faculty and staff.
    • Assist principals, assistant principals and school leadership with vertical alignment initiatives among all HCS school buildings.
    • Lead in the vision and implementation of digital integration within the K-4 classroom.
    • Partner with families, faculty and staff in the discipleship of students.
    • Effectively recruit, interview and hire faculty and staff positions.
    • Oversee disciplinary procedures, reporting serious and/or consistent violations of the student code of conduct to the HOS.
    • Ensure student adherence to school rules and dress code.
    • Assist faculty in fostering a positive classroom atmosphere and learning environment.
    • Facilitate the revision and proper application of the student and employee handbook.
    • Oversee implementation of emergency operation plans within the schools.
    • Lead faculty meetings and faculty-staff development.
    • Attend events in support of student involvement.
    • Serve as a member on various committees as requested.
    • Responsible for oversight of all academic programs, co-curricular clubs and activities.
    • Monitor student academic eligibility for co-curricular activities and general progress in academic areas.
    • Provide oversight to the After School Care Directors.
    • Serve as a member of the Leadership and Academic Teams.
    • Conduct new student screenings and interviews, discerning appropriate fit for enrollment at HCS.
    • Meet with new families; orient them to the mission, vision, and key components of the Elementary programs.
    • Attend Board of Director meetings as requested.
    • Maintain professional credentials as required by the IDOE, Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) or other applicable accrediting agencies.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to meet physical requirements of the position. Must be able to maintain a stationary position for the majority of the work day. Must be able to traverse campus. Must be able to use computers, appropriate software, and other audio-visual equipment. Must be able to position oneself to work with children. Must be able to communicate with others. Specific vision abilities required in this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to discern low volume sounds. Must be able to assist children for health and safety reasons.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT: Generally office setting. Possible change in temperature/humidity; potential for excessive noise, using computer/monitor screen. Some exposure to the elements is to be expected while assisting with student arrival/dismissal and safety drills.

    WORK SCHEDULE: This is a full time, 12-month position with regular daily hours of 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Additional evening and occasional weekend hours are to be expected to attend scheduled and unscheduled meetings, student activities, school programs, etc. This position does not follow the academic calendar. The schedule during school breaks, including the summer, is full time. This position is eligible for PTO (paid time off) and paid holidays.
