    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Polk County in its missionto protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community effortsand its vision to be theHealthiest Statein the Nation.

    Furthermore, the incumbent is expected to incorporate the agency values ofInnovation,Collaboration,Accountability,Responsiveness andExcellencein all aspects of their work.

    Provides expanded nursing services and health care in select elementary, middle and high schools. This position may require performance of interpreter duties, if bilingual, or implementation of the Department'sLimited English Proficiency Plan.


    Screening Duties:

    • Assists teachers in assessing health problems of students through health appraisals, medical histories, records and screening programs. Improves student utilization of school health services.
    • Expands screening activities and health care. Coordinates health services for students with parents or guardians and other agencies in the community. Provides appropriate referral and follow-up procedures including home visits.
    • Maintains records for planning and assessing school health services. Monitors legal and practice standards for the administration of medication.
    • Identifies actual or potential health problems, acts as a liaison between school, home and community agencies.
    • Provides and assists with state mandated Health Screenings (Vision, BMI & Scoliosis). Refers and follows up on abnormal results as directed.
    • Maintains record of abnormal screening activities for annual school reports and statistical data.
    • Reviews and monitors immunization records to maintain compliance with State mandates. Collaborates with school staff to obtain immunization records and compliance.

    Care Planning Duties:

    • Provides support services to students who exhibit mild to severe health, behavioral, or learning problems, which affect school performance. Acts as a child advocate who confers with school personnel and community agencies regarding potential problems of child abuse.
    • Serves as a team member representing health in the evaluation and decision for placement of medically complex and at-risk students.
    • Assists school in implementing and carrying out emergency health care plans.
    • Networks with parents and school staff to create Individual Health Plans as needed for students with special needs and chronic health conditions.

    Health Education/Instructional Duties:

    • Participates in health education classes as a consultant or provider. Encourages and provides wellness and health in-service programs for faculty. Provides health education and counseling to parents, students and staff as needed.
    • Conducts and participates in the orientation and mentoring of new staff and nursing students about school health services.

    Other Functions:

    • Insures and promotes safe school environment by implementing safety measures in the schools and assessing school health nursing quality improvement activities.
    • Communicates and serves on health committees and acts as a liaison between school board and health department concerning clinical and administrative issues.
    • Performs generalized public health work in an area geographically removed from direct supervision.
    • Serves as the Information Custodian for the Nursing Division for assigned information sets; maintains confidentiality of the information in accordance with state and federal statutes, of Health Information Security
    • Policies, Protocols and Procedures, in accordance with Protocol: Security 3V, Sec. 1-3.
    • Performs other duties as required, including performance of additional interpreter duties, consistent with skill level, and as needed.
    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


    • Skill in using medical instruments or testing equipment and taking blood pressure readings.
    • Ability to interview patients in order to obtain a medical history, keep accurate records and distribute prescribed medications.
    • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with others.
    • Interest in the health and welfare of children.
