    About the Navy Chaplain Corps

    The Navy Chaplain Corps is a diverse community of more than 800 chaplains from over 100 different faith groups, including Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and many others. Each chaplain is also a Navy Officer, holding an important leadership role.

    Chaplains provide spiritual support to servicemembers and their families, facilitating religious requirements for all faiths and caring for those with no specific faith affiliation. They advise commanders on ensuring the free exercise of religion.

    Responsibilities

    • Conduct worship services in various settings
    • Perform religious rites and ceremonies, such as weddings, funeral services, and baptisms
    • Counsel individuals seeking guidance
    • Oversee religious education programs, including Sunday school and youth groups
    • Visit and provide spiritual guidance to hospitalized personnel and their family members
    • Train lay leaders who conduct religious education programs
    • Promote attendance at religious services, retreats, and conferences
    • Advise leaders at all levels on morale, ethics, and spiritual well-being

    Work Environment

    Navy chaplains immerse themselves in the daily lives of servicemembers, offering guidance and insight whenever needed. They may provide support while on land or at sea, presiding over religious ceremonies on a base or conducting services from an aircraft carrier's flight deck.

    Training and Advancement

    Those pursuing a chaplain position attend Officer Development School (ODS) and the Naval Chaplaincy School and Center. Promotion opportunities are available based on performance, and specialized training can lead to valuable credentialing and occupational opportunities.

    Education Opportunities

    Navy chaplains continue their education throughout their careers, pursuing opportunities through the Advanced Education Program while being paid full-time. They may also advance their education by attending institutions like the Naval Postgraduate School or completing Joint Professional Military Education.

    Qualifications and Requirements

    • Hold a bachelor's degree from a qualified four-year undergraduate institution
    • Have a graduate degree in theological or related studies from an accredited institution
    • Have two years of full-time religious leadership experience compatible with Navy chaplain duties
    • Obtain an Ecclesiastical Endorsement from a registered religious faith organization
