    DESCRIPTION

About the Navy's Surface Warfare Officers

The United States Navy has the world's most advanced and technologically sophisticated fleet of ships. As a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO), you will be responsible for maintaining and operating these vessels, as well as leading a team of highly trained sailors.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Direct personnel operations aboard various types of Navy ships, including aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers, amphibious warfare ships, mine warfare ships, and frigates.
    • Manage shipboard vertical launch systems and utilize computer displays and advanced technology in battle and ship defense.
    • Support Navy expeditionary forces, Theater Air Missile operations, anti-submarine warfare, surface-to-air warfare, and supply missions.

    Working at Sea and Ashore

As a SWO, your work environment will be diverse, with opportunities to serve both at sea and ashore. You may be assigned to a variety of ships, or work in command and management positions at bases and stations worldwide.

    Training and Advancement

Newly commissioned SWOs undergo extensive training, which includes both sea and shore-based instruction. After completing initial sea tours, you may be selected for high-level staff, command, or strategic roles. Promotion opportunities are competitive and based on performance.

    • Be a U.S. citizen.
    • Be between 19 and 29 years old at the time of commissioning.
    • Meet the Navy's physical standards.
