    Secondary Classroom Teacher - English

    Description: Under the direct supervision of the Head of School, the secondary English classroom teacher position plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. The secondary English classroom teacher instructs and supervises students in a variety of learning settings. The teacher provides an environment conducive to the overall development of each student. Assignments may also include working with individuals and/or small groups of students and performing other duties as assigned.

    • Plan and implement instructional programs and services that adhere to the school mission and meet the strengths, interests, needs, and abilities of each student.
    • Maintain a safe and secure learning environment.
    • Create a learning environment that nurtures the talents and development of all students.
    • Prepare long term and short term plans for secondary English and elective courses.
    • Provide a specialized learning environment, aligned to standards, that accelerates student learning.
    • Plan and utilize varied methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that support each student in achieving learning objectives and outcomes.
    • Prepare appropriate lesson plans and specialized instruction for English classes/courses assigned to achieve learning outcomes.
    • Monitor student progress and design lessons aligned to student needs.
    • Evaluate student performance through observations, assignments, tests, quizzes, informal and formal assessments.
    • Provide input to student educational plans and team processes.
    • Maintain complete and accurate student records.
    • Communicate student progress to students and parents/guardians. Meet with students and parents to support progress and growth.
    • Oversee the appropriate use and care of instructional materials, resources, and equipment.
    • Collaborate with school administration, colleagues, support staff, parents, and community members in the best interests of students.
    • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and serve on various committees/workgroups.
    • Improve skills and knowledge base in current trends, evidence-based practices, technology, and interdisciplinary connections.
    • Oversees technology support for inventory and maintenance of devices.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Salary:

    The salary for this 9 month position will be based on a salary scale. Actual salary placement will be in accordance with the procedures of Glenwood Academy.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Knowledge of the principles and pedagogy. Knowledge of state standards and specialized, research-based interventions.
    • Knowledge of the strengths and needs presented by students with language based learning differences.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality when discussing students' progress and concerns with staff.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form.
    • Ability to implement effective lesson plans to support the educational program.
    • Ability to work with diverse learners.
    • Possess basic technology knowledge to support student learning and clerical tasks.
    • Skilled in technology competency and software applications such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
    • Ability to demonstrate strong human relations skills.
    • Ability to have positive and professional communication with staff, administrators, parents, and/or the community.

    Education:

    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in an applicable field.

    Licenses and Certification:

    Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Certificate commensurate to the position is preferred.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Valid teaching certificate in a secondary content area
    • Special Education experience or certification
    • Three previous years of teaching experience
