- Develop familiarity with the SSRL physical plant and exercise proactive stewardship in close coordination with SLAC F&O Division to ensure the aging facility continues to operate reliably for 24/7 synchrotron user operations.
- Serve as SSRL primary POC for F&O activities in and around the SSRL/SPEAR complex.
- Coordinate work to ensure that F&O projects (electrical, HVAC, roof repairs, etc.) conducted at SSRL/SPEAR3 are designed and installed correctly with minimal impact to SSRL user operations.
- Lead the project delivery process for SSRL facilities in partnership with SLAC F&O. Initiate, plan, and coordinate major conventional construction projects that include extensive concrete work, industrial building construction, and medium voltage electrical design and installation. Ensure the safe and efficient construction of all SSRL facilities projects whether conducted by outside contractors or SLAC F&O.
- Advocate for SSRL facilities needs in annual and multi-year project prioritization, planning, and funding activities.
- Act as project manager for the largest, most complex infrastructure projects at SSRL as required.
- Manage the operational functions of facilities engineering for SSRL.
- Review and analyze project estimates prepared by others for completeness and reasonableness. Prepare budgetary estimates for a wide variety of infrastructure projects.
- Work with SLAC procurement and the SLAC F&O division to bid and award contracts for vendors responsible for the construction of conventional facilities.
- Ensure that all projects are approved by the SLAC Building Inspection Office (BIO) as necessary.
- Act as subject matter expert for reviews of facilities activities occurring at SSRL and provide guidance to SSRL management regarding such projects.
- Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering discipline or other appropriate specialty and four years of directly related experience including managerial experience including leading technical or cross-functional teams. Position Overview
The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), a directorate of SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, is a national user facility providing synchrotron radiation for research in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, material science, medicine, and physics.
SSRL operates and maintains the 3GeV electron storage ring SPEAR3, the associated injector facility, and synchrotron radiation beam lines on SPEAR3.
The SSRL Beam Line Systems (BLS) division designs, constructs, and commissions new synchrotron radiation beam lines and retrofits existing beam lines for new capabilities or improved performance.
The SSRL BLS division seeks an SSRL Physical Plant Engineer to exercise stewardship of the SSRL physical plant and projects associated with both the building of new facilities and the upkeep of current building infrastructure in close coordination with the SLAC Facilities and Operations (F&O) Division.

Meets the applicable roles and responsibilities as described in the ESH Manual, Chapter 1—General Policy and Responsibilities:The expected pay range for this position is $140,000 - $198,000 per annum.
