    ContinuousAn Equal Opportunity EmployerPosition SummaryUnder supervision and as assigned, the deputy medical examiner is responsible for investigating reportable deaths to include determining jurisdiction of the case, completing narrative reports in a timely manner, assisting with autopsies, and performing other duties as required.

    This is an on-call per diem position which requires 12 to 24 hours of availability for on-call each week. The on-call schedule consists of a rotation that includes primarily nights, weekends and holidays.

    As on-boarding/training typically takes place during day shift, this position works well with an applicant's primary job having a rotating schedule, similar to those in the hospital, fire department or emergency medical service.

    The current pay schedule provides for on-call pay or $3/hr ($4.50/hr holidays) and $120.00 per case.

    Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThis job description reflects management's assignment of essential functions; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.

    Conduct investigations of deaths in Walworth County in accordance with Wisconsin State Statutes as requested/directed by the appointed Medical Examiner.

    This shall include evaluating death scenes, examining and preserving evidence, investigating the circumstances of death by obtaining personal data and medical history via records and interviews; and establishes initial assessment of cause and manner of death as natural, suicidal, accidental, or homicidal.

    Assist in the identification of decedent, and determines and coordinates proper disposition of the body, including removal and transportation of the body to the morgue.

    Notify next of kin personally or in conjunction with law enforcement/other agencies.
    Answer family questions and concerns.
    Prepare reports documenting the facts and findings of all death investigations and other activities regarding the decedent.

    Examine bodies, investigate cause and manner of death and prepare and issue certificates, disinterment permits, and other legally binding documents for embalming and cremation.

    Assist in the collection, preservation, and chain of custody of bodies, criminal and physical evidence, specimens, and property.
    Release bodies and property to the appropriate agency, funeral director, or family member and secures documentation of the transaction.
    Take photographs of bodies and other evidence at autopsies or death scenes as required.
    Testify in civil and criminal cases when necessary.

    Establish and maintain effective working and public relations with various local and state law enforcement agencies, other county departments, medical personnel, funeral service professionals, and the public.

    Attend training meetings and seminars and maintain current knowledge of methods and procedures through professional literature, or publications.
    Perform other duties as assigned.
    Demonstrate a commitment to county safety and risk management efforts.
    QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or equivalent and seven months to one year of relevant prior experience.

    Proven experience in ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals as well as ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

    Knowledge of Wisconsin State Statutes concerning investigations of deaths, investigative techniques, principles and practices used in determining cause and manner of death.

    Interactions and CommunicationsProvides specialized information and/or recommendations to others regarding an area of expertise.
    Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsValid Wisconsin driver's license.
    Proof of minimum liability auto insurance coverage.
    Certification as a Medicolegal death investigator preferred.

    Decision MakingThis position has authority to make decisions that are within general procedures and protocols; supervision is available as required or requested.
