    Job Duties

    The Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a Senior Equipment Repair Technician for its Winchester Equipment Shop. As the qualified candidate, you will perform and oversee a combination of advanced skilled equipment repairs and preventative tasks in an equipment shop environment, as well as provide technical and directional guidance to floor technicians in support of shop objectives.

    Minimum Qualifications


    • Considerable skill in using computerized diagnostic shop equipment and working with electronic components.

    • Ability to obtain VA State Inspection License within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter.

    • Certification in ASE L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialists – Light Duty or ASE L2 Electronic Diesel Diagnosis Specialists-Heavy Duty.

    • Ability to read, comprehend technical repair manuals, schematics, gauges and testing devices, as well as use computerized diagnostic shop equipment.

    • Advanced skill and proficiency in diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance on all types of highway maintenance equipment and vehicles.

    • Valid driver's license.

    • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

    • Certification in ASE Master Automobile or ASE Master Medium-Heavy Truck.

    • Ability to perform heavy manual labor and operate various types of equipment.

    • Certification in AWS Welding Mild Steel certification for Stick and MIG or IFPS Certified Mobile Hydraulics Mechanic.

    • Safety shoes required.

    • Knowledge of proper hazardous waste disposal, OSHA, VOSH regulations, and general shop safety practices.

    • Skill in the use of computers and basic software applications with ability to maintain records and reports.

    • Experience providing technical guidance to others.

    VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore,
    advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

    VDOT is an emergency response agency, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed.

    NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
