    Position Overview:


    Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento is the foundation of Sutter Health, Northern California's largest health network with 29 acute care hospitals, more than 5,000 primary care physicians and specialists, home health, occupational health, psychiatric care and more.

    The downtown Sacramento medical center is made up of several facilities that include Ose Adams Medical Pavilion, Anderson Lucchetti Women's & Children's Center, and Sutter Center for Psychiatry.

    The 281-bed specialty medical center focuses on general acute medical/surgical care as well as a medical base to advanced services for cancer, orthopedics, spine, and neurology, and neurosurgery.

    Anderson Lucchetti Women's & Children's Center


    The 242-bed specialty medical center focuses on women's and children's specialty services and includes medical intensive care units for cardiac and neurological patients.


    The Oncology Nursing Director provides administrative and nursing leadership in an assigned inpatient setting in order to provide excellence in the delivery of high-quality patient care and an optimal patient care experience.

    The incumbent directs the activities and resources of the nursing unit in partnership with physicians, medical staff, leadership, and others to resolve operational challenges and/or to improve processes.

    Works with senior leadership to develop and establish short and long-term strategic plans that complement system, operating unit or affiliate goals and initiatives, including business, operations, and/or organizational priorities.

    Sets priorities and allocates resources to align with business objectives and annual plan.

    Develops and establishes the direction of policies and procedures, and sets a structure for providing safe, consistent and effective patient care.

    Establishes overall operating and capital budget with input from management team, ensuring financial targets are achieved and variances are addressed timely.


    Job Description:

    EDUCATION:

    • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

    CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE:

    • RN-Registered Nurse of California
    • BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider

    TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

    • 12 years recent relevant experience.

    JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    OPERATIONS:

    • Provides administrative and clinical nursing leadership for various nursing areas, nursing departments or nursing programs, which may include one or more patient care teams.
    • Demonstrates an organizational perspective and concern for impact of decisions implemented.
    • Establishes and implements goals, standards and practices that guide and support patient care initiatives while ensuring the delivery of high-value quality care and exceptional care experiences.
    • Develops and fosters a solid partnership with physicians, medical staff and Sutter Health leaders, care teams and other employees to facilitate and collaborate on initiatives, to resolve operational challenges and/or to improve processes.
    • Develops and establishes the direction of policies and procedures, and sets a structure for providing safe, consistent and effective patient care.

    • Ensures protocols are in place to comply with affiliate, operating unit, and/or system standards, policies and procedures, the Joint Commission (TJC) standards, and applicable laws and regulations.
    • Takes a strategic approach in identifying best practices and standardizing workflows/processes and developing plans of action to implement changes.
    • Facilitates development of departmental goals that support the mission, vision, and values of the nursing and the organization.
    • Supports nurse managers in the implementation of plans and strategies to accomplish goals and vision- serving as a resource as necessary.

    STRATEGY/PLANNING:

    • Works with senior leadership to develop and establish short- and long-term strategic plans that complement system, operating unit or affiliate goals, including business, operations, and/or organizational priorities.
    • Communicates strategic plans to nursing department managers to ensure alignment of goals.
    • Sets priorities and allocates resources to align with business objectives and annual plan.
    • Leads departmental goal setting process and provides roadmap for accomplishing goals. Monitors progress, developing action plans to address issues and challenges.
    • Communicates affiliate, operating unit and system goals to staff, helping staff understand impact on patients, operations and resources.
    • Develops/approves plan of action to address current and future resource needs in order to meet service and/or operational demands and objectives.
    • Identifies process improvement opportunities, and ensures action plans short/long term operational objectives.
    • Monitors operational trends and recurrent issues, ensuring managers implement appropriate actions to address issues.
    • Actively includes other leaders in the development of new or existing programs.
    • May participate in and/or facilitate ad-hoc committees and task forces to collaborate on or support new or ongoing initiatives.

    FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT:

    • Establishes overall operating and capital budget with input from management team, ensuring financial targets are achieved and variances are addressed timely.

    • Approves department operating budgets, and capital requests.
    • Works with nursing department managers to ensure achievement of financial targets via effective utilization of personnel, resources and supplies.
    • Monitors nursing department productivity, ensuring operational challenges are addressed timely.
    • Reviews financial reports and develops and implements corrective action plans to address unfavorable variances.
    • Reviews and approves employee expense reimbursements, and billing statements from vendors according to established protocol.

    PEOPLE:

    • Provides and fosters an inclusive work environment that encourages staff engagement and collaboration, establishing a culture of teamwork.
    • Manages assigned staff, makes hiring and termination decisions, and reviews and approves timekeeping records.
    • Establishes expectations with all direct reports, holds individuals and work teams accountable, and ensures job descriptions accurately reflect job responsibilities and expectations.
    • Evaluates staff performance and determines/approves merit increase. Provides constructive feedback, coaching and counseling. Implements disciplinary actions and/or performance improvement plans to achieve desired performance. May work with leadership when major disciplinary action is necessary or in consultation with Human Resources.
    • Provides opportunities for career development, role expansion, and cross-training.
    • Conducts staff meetings for informative and educational purposes.
    • Responds timely to alleged violations of policies, procedures, regulations and standards of conduct by evaluating or initiating investigative procedures. May consult with Human Resources or Compliance to determine appropriate course of action.
    • Ensures staff maintains current and appropriate professional credentials.
    • During peak periods or emergencies, may perform tasks to support the delivery of patient care.
    • May assume responsibilities of one-up leader role during his/her absence.

    • Advanced knowledge of nursing operations and workflows, and how department's process/workflow impacts other department operations.

    Pay Range is $97.51 to $156.02 / hour

    The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location.

    This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled.

    Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate's experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs.

    Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
