Summary

The Surgical Assistant Extern in the Operation Room, under the direction of the Operating Room Clinical Leadership Team will be responsible for age specific care, safety, and quality care for patients undergoing surgical intervention based on the standards of care and in accordance with the policies, procedures, and guidelines of the Operation Room. Under direction of a designated preceptor and or the operation surgeon, the surgical assistant extern is responsible for assistance with patient positioning prior to the beginning of the procedure. The extern is also responsible for providing exposure, tying, sutures, applying dressings to the patients undergoing surgical intervention. The extern is also expected to work closely with team members; other responsibilities will include but are not limited to preparing the room for procedures, room turnovers, maintaining sterile technique, and restocking as needed. The surgical extern assignments will be made by the Operating Room Charge Nurse in collaboration with the designated preceptor.

Education and Experience

High School Grad or Equivalent

Student must be in the final year of accredited school Surgical Assistant program - required

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Basic Life Support (BLS)
