    Job Summary

    The Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Nurse Coordinators are specialized registered nurses, in an ambulatory and inpatient care setting, that facilitate the care and education of ventricular assist device patients and their families.

    From initial contact, through the evaluation for VAD implant, during the pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative periods as well as continual outpatient follow-up.

    The VAD Nurse Coordinator ensure continuity of care across the VAD/Heart Transplant continuum.

    Essential Functions

    Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.


    • Works closely with inpatient VAD team and beside clinical nurses for coordination of care. Participates in inpatient multidisciplinary rounds to obtain information to facilitate care of the patient.
    • Provides VAD educational/outreach programs to health care providers and staff across Stanford Children's Health, community organizations, schools, and professional VAD/transplant societies and organizations.
    • Reviews and evaluates lab results and notifies the physician or advance practice provider of abnormalities. Appropriately documents communication to providers in the medical record.
    • Arranges all appropriate medical therapy and testing under the guidance of physicians and advance practice providers.
    • Facilitates the discharge process including assessment of readiness. Provides documentation to providers, EMS department, local hospital and electric company at discharge regarding patients home environment. Facilitates the delivery of home VAD dressing supplies to appropriately care for the VAD
    • Provides timely and appropriate clinical advice and interventions through direct patient contact as well as telephone contact. Educates staff and providers about the mechanics of how a VAD works, living with a VAD, and caring for the VAD.
    • Develops, reviews, and evaluates effectiveness of guidelines, clinical pathways, policies and procedures within the VAD program.
    • Attend weekly VAD/Transplant Selection Committee. Ensures VAD financial clearance.
    Minimum Qualifications

    Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.


    Education:
    Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university.


    Experience:
    Three (3) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience.


    License/Certification:
    Current American Heart Association (AHA) Certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification.


    • Knowledge of normal cardiopulmonary anatomy and physiology
    • Knowledge of cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery and heart transplant nursing care
    • Knowledge of and ability to coordinate the care of the ventricular assist device recipient in an ambulatory setting to achieve optimal physical, social, and emotional rehabilitation.
    • Knowledge of and ability to monitor and coordinate the care of VAD patients on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) transplant waiting list.
    • Ability to identify common cardiopulmonary pathophysiology.
    • Ability to demonstrate proficiency and continual growth in the knowledge of Mechanical Circulatory Support Devices/Ventricular Assist Devices.
    • Ability to anticipate, assess, plan for, and manage physical, psychological, and social needs of the patient and family/caregiver and provide appropriate support, comfort, and reassurance.
    • Ability to apply a professional nursing code of ethics and professional guidelines to clinical practice.
    • Ability to be a resource for all employees assigned area of specialization.
    • Ability to develop, evaluate, implement and, as necessary, modify a patient care plan to meet the needs of individual patients.
    • Ability to integrate patient care with other members of the interdisciplinary health care team and provide direction or guidance to non-licensed personnel in assigned area of responsibility to ensure quality care.
    • Ability to observe changes in the medical condition of patients and effectively communicate these changes to other nursing staff members and physicians.
    • Ability to provide age-specific, quality, patient-centered care to all patients through the nursing process and standards of nursing practice with sensitivity and respect for the diversity of human experience.
    • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area.
    • Knowledge of current theories, principles, practices, standards, emerging technologies, techniques and approaches in the nursing profession, and the health care system, and the responsibility and accountability for the outcome of practice.
    • Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care in the area of assignment.
    • Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
    • Knowledge of medical terminology; principles and practices of health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention and management; medications and drugs, common dosages, their physical and physiological effects, and possible adverse reactions.

    Pay Range

    Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

    Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

    Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

    Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $149,552.00 to $187,574.40
