    Description

    Overview

A full-time Post-doctoral Fellow position is available in the Ahn lab. The fellow will have opportunities to investigate the role of ghrelin and mitochondria on muscle weakness in age- and diseases-associated loss of muscle mass and strength. The lab is currently funded to perform skeletal muscle research, while aiming to investigate cardiac muscle in these pathological conditions. The lab belongs to the Section of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist School of Medicine.

We are a basic science and clinical research laboratory using interventions and transgenic mouse models. The lab is currently funded to perform preclinical research to test the role of unacylated ghrelin in sarcopenia and cancer cachexia. We will use various experimental techniques ranging from cell cultures, state-of-the-art mitochondrial functional assays (high resolution respirometry and fluorometry), muscle contractile function assays, and a wide variety of molecular biology assays, and unbiased omics approaches (RNAseq, proteomics, and metabolomics).

Qualifications include PhD and 0-2 years of postdoctoral experience in muscle and mitochondrial biology. The ideal candidate will be highly self-motivated and possess strong training in molecular biology, animal studies, biochemical and histological assays. Postdoctoral fellows are expected to publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, participate in conferences for the intellectual exchange of research ideas, engage in existing and new collaborations within and outside Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and assist with training of undergraduate and graduate students, as needed.

Application Instructions: Interested candidates should submit the following documents via email to: 1) a cover letter outlining your research interests and goals, and 2) a curriculum vitae (CV) that includes lists of publications and contact information for three professional references. Reference letters are not required at the initial stage but will be considered during the final selection process. Postdoctoral fellow will receive structured and extensive mentoring by the PI and collaborating investigators in the department of Internal Medicine. Candidates with US citizenship or residency may have an opportunity to apply for T32 fellowship. The fellow is expected to design and conduct research experiments; manage research projects; prepare reports and papers for publication, presentation, and future research; contribute to grant writing and are encouraged to write applications for fellowships.
