    Instructional Laboratory Coordinator - Stockton, United States - San Joaquin Delta College

    Description

    Performs a variety of technical duties including the more complex and specialized in the preparation and set up of experiments and demonstrations conducted in assigned science laboratories; ensures that classes have adequate and appropriate materials for various experiments and demonstrations; ensures the safety of students and staff in the use of laboratory equipment and supplies (ensures laboratories operate efficiently, effectively, and safely); cleans and maintains assigned laboratory equipment; and orders, receives and maintains an inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies; oversees the hazardous materials procedures, storage, and disposal; ensures compliance with all rules and regulations related to maintaining safe conditions in the laboratory.


    SECSM TrAC:
    Serves as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the Science, Engineering, Computer Science and Math TrAC.


    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
    Receives general direction from an assigned supervisor.

    Exercises technical and functional oversight of lower level laboratory staff and student employees.

    Identifies trainings and trains lower level laboratory staff and student employees as needed.
    Responsibilities and Duties

    Coordinate faculty requests and perform a variety of technical duties in the preparation and setup of experiments and demonstrations conducted in assigned laboratories; independently prepare chemical solutions, bacteriological materials, cultures, plants, animals, specimens and other scientific items for use in laboratory experiments; assure that laboratories are cleaned after usage.

    Assist with simulations, tests, quizzes to students as provided by instructors in classroom or laboratory environments.

    Set up and provide technical and other assistance to student with special projects, field research trips, and classroom/laboratory presentations; may demonstrate or assist to demonstrate complicated or hazardous procedures.

    Set up, operate and maintain a variety of laboratory equipment and apparatus; construct special equipment and models as needed for assigned experiments.

    Works with the Director of Facilities Planning and Management to oversee the storage of all hazardous materials and the collection sites within the TrAC in compliance with federal, state, and county codes (possess an understanding of chemical safety, proper storage, labelling, and proper disposal) and coordinate with the hazardous materials vendor to remove wastes from the TrAC.

    In coordination with the dean and faculty; develops, records, implements and oversees work/laboratory policies and procedures to ensure a safe and effective work and learning environment in support of students learning objectives.

    Works with appropriate staff members in maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for laboratory preparations. Maintain and update SOPs for all new and existing equipment for student reference.
    Monitors and maintains budget for assigned functions and activities; monitors expenditures in accordance with District policies and procedures.

    Receive, issue, store and maintain laboratory materials, chemicals, cultures, solutions, plants, animals and other items; coordinate the clean-up and removal of all surplus items; process the surplus item list and maintain related records; process record related to preserved specimen disposal; prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; monitor and maintain records of materials and equipment on loan to instructors or students.

    Maintain an accurate inventory of all equipment and materials; process purchase orders for laboratory supplies; research product prices and vendors; ensure that items delivered are correct; maintain related purchasing records.

    Contact college faculty and staff as needed to ensure that science laboratories have an adequate stock of materials, equipment and supplies; participate in the development of procedures for various laboratory experiments.

    Perform a variety of administrative support duties related to the assigned budget; maintain related financial ledgers; ensure that all petty cash transactions, purchase orders, repair records, contracts, field trips, duplicating services and other transactions are accounted for.

    Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on laboratory and classroom equipment; troubleshoot equipment and identify defective equipment for repair or replacement.

    Ensure that all regulatory permits needed for scientific activities are current including alcohol use and animal use permits; contact regulatory agencies to renew permits as required.

    Compile data for research projects; conduct cost analyses, compile expenditures and conduct related research; develop reports, process and submit information to management in a clear and concise format.

    Coordinate service maintenance contracts for laboratories; prepare justifications for annual increases, research costs; process contracts and maintain accurate records.

    Screen all experimental protocols that use hazardous materials; maintain current inventory of protocols; maintain current inventory of all hazardous materials in the TrAC.

    Organize safety training for laboratory staff.
    Assist management to plan, establish and implement department goals and priorities.
    Works with Facilities Management and the Dean regarding building concerns.
    Be the first line of defense for bringing up systems from a power outage or system failure.

    Have a basic understanding of how to start up and completely bring down any system in a safe manner.

    Contact Vendors and obtain price quotes for parts or equipment necessary for the laboratory.

    Maintain Preventative Maintenance schedules for all systems as necessary, and be available to assist vendors where necessary.

    Coordinate the distribution of appropriate agreements and waiver/assumption of risk forms; as well as store forms in a confidential setting.

    Identify software needs for instructional labs and work with the IT department to identify the product that will serve instructional needs while being cost effective.

    Work closely with the Director of Facilities Planning and Management and the respective TrAC Dean.
    Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

    When assigned to the SECSM TrAC:


    Serve as Chemical Hygiene Officer as required by OSHA; develop and conduct general and safety orientation for staff; ensure compliance with all rules and regulations related to maintaining safe conditions in the workplace; develop proper hazardous chemical and biological waste disposal streams in accordance with the Environmental Department, ensuring lab technician understanding; ensure proper and safe storage of chemical reagents; oversee testing of emergency and safety equipment; follow-up on corrective action to keep safety items functional; monitor and control access to prep room and hazardous materials; completes monthly reports submitted to the Director of Facilities Planning and Management and other reports related to the laboratories/prep rooms.

    Monitor the activities and usage of laboratories and give directions as needed; ensure the proper techniques for safe handling of chemicals and other items are adhered to; contact laboratory supervisors as needed.

    Keep current regarding technical developments and safety concerns by participating in assigned trainings, workshops or seminars.

    Serve as the main contact for Community Education classes and Middle College High School labs that are scheduled in the SCMA building; ensure labs are delivered in a timely, effective and safe manner and that laboratory personnel are knowledgeable and adhere to safe practices appropriate to assigned laboratories.

    When assigned to the Electron Microscopy program:

    Provide a variety of technical support to students and instructors in the operation of the Electron Microscopy Lab, train students in the use of:

    Transmission Electron Microscope (Diffraction Pattern Imaging and Indexing)
    Field Emission Electron Microscope (Low KV Imaging UHR)
    Scanning Electron Microscope (High SEM and ESEM Modes)
    Basic Usage and Understanding of Ultra Microtome and ALL Sample Prep Systems for Biological and Material Labs.

    Confirm proper functionality and working condition of ALL equipment.

    Ensure Proper Alignment of ALL systems in Microscope Wing.

    Understand how to recognize failures within a system to place service calls.

    Upkeep all accessories that run the Microscopes from the back end.

    Make Recommendations to Faculty about acquisition or repair of equipment to improve the educational program.

    Establish schedules for student use of Electron Microscope and Associated Equipment; provide assistance to students preparing specimens for use with all Imaging equipment from Basic OLM, to Compound Scopes thru Electron Microscopes.

    Ensure that adequate levels of all necessary gases, such as Nitrogen, Argon and Liquid Nitrogen are available and maintained throughout the school year.

    Maintain Awareness of new Developments in the Field of Electron Microscopy and incorporate new techniques into classroom instruction and laboratory procedures.

    Maintain and update SOPs for all new and existing equipment for student reference.

    Respond to questions and inquiries regarding the Electron Microscopy Program via telephone, email, and walk-ins with regards to interests, hiring, updates, new technologies and basic questions and concerns.

    Plan, schedule and attend on campus or off-site promotional activities to help gain interest and promote awareness of the microscopy program to the community.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge of:


    Pertinent federal, state and local codes, laws and regulations including those pertaining to the safe management of biology and chemistry laboratories, hazards, and wastes.

    Operations and activities of a modern scientific laboratory in a college setting.
    Operation of a variable condenser OLM for darkfield and phase contrast microscopy.

    Principles, practices, theories, and terminology of the discipline(s) of the specific lab assignment such as biology, chemistry, electron microscopy, molecular biology, microbiology and digital microscopy, astronomy, geography, geology or physics.

    Operational characteristics of standard laboratory equipment, supplies and materials of the discipline(s) including but not limited to autoclaves, industrial dishwashers, incubators, spectrophotometer, flow hoods, compound and stereo microscopes, ultra microtomes, transition electron microscopes, field emission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscope.

    Methods and techniques of preparing chemicals and solutions.
    Methods and techniques of handling hazardous materials.
    Standard office machines and equipment; MS Office software applications.
    Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
    Principles and procedures of record keeping.
    Principles and practices of inventory control.
    Instruments, machinery, equipment, tools, supplies, procedures, and methods used in instructional laboratories supporting biology, chemistry, microbiology, and/or electron microscopy.
    Behavior, reactivity, stability, compatibility, and storage requirements of chemical substances found in a college-level laboratory.
    Fundamental physiological, anatomical, biochemical, and behavioral requirements of living things at all levels of biological organization.
    Principles and practices used in the maintenance, repair and fabrication equipment and tools pertinent to the assigned instructional areas.
    Advanced mathematical principles as applied to the assigned instructional area.
    Basic principles and practices of student instruction.
    Basic principles and practices of training.
    Emergency first aid procedures.

    If assigned to the SECSM TrAC:
    Cell transformation.
    BioPac systems including data acquisition and analysis systems for physiology.

    Ability to:
    Operate, maintain and clean modern laboratory equipment, supplies and materials, appropriate to the individual laboratory requirements.
    Operate standard office machines and equipment including computers.
    Care for and maintain specimens used for laboratory experiments.
    Prepare various chemicals and solutions.
    Safely store, label, re-stock, and dispose of chemicals and hazardous waste according to established procedures.
    Ensure adherence to established laboratory rules and regulations.
    Maintain laboratory supplies, accurate inventory and associated files and records.
    Conduct research and analysis and prepare reports and records as assigned.
    Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

    Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.

    Sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; continuous exposure to hazardous substances, unpleasant smells, extreme temperatures, high pressures, and loud noises; lift up to 30 pounds.

    Set up for various laboratory experiments for multiple and diverse technical areas of instruction including chemistry, biology, and/or electron microscopy.

    Provide assistance to faculty in assigned laboratories supporting multiple and diverse technical areas of instruction.
    Provide instructional assistance to students in multiple technical areas of instruction.

    Provide updates to staff and faculty regarding changes in laws, regulations, technologies, and equipment and oversee appropriate processes in the laboratories.

    Maintain assigned laboratory tools, equipment, and machinery including diagnosing, analyzing, and correcting mechanical defects.
    Perform mathematical calculations and take measurements with accuracy and precision.
    Maintain assigned laboratories in a clean and orderly fashion.
    Operate various types of microscopes, including electron microscopes.
    Correctly operate the instruments, tools, and equipment required for the assigned instructional areas.
    Education and Experience Requirements

    Education/Training:
    Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in chemistry, biology or a related field with one additional year of qualifying experience


    OR
    Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline related to the assignment plus three additional years of qualifying experience


    OR
    Certificate in related field with five additional years of qualifying experience (if applying for Electron Microcopy Coordinator)

    Training:
    Successful completion of hazardous waste handling, blood borne pathogens, and emergency procedures/first aid training within six months of hire.
