    The incumbent leads the architecture, design and development of the next generation Data Warehouse platform and analytic solutions. This position has no responsibility for providing care to patients.
    The EDW supports patient care, research, education, and other missions by providing data solutions for customers across health sciences.

    Health Sciences Strategy collaborates with entities across the university to craft healthsystem strategy and develop and implement strategic initiatives, working on behalf of the CEO of University of Utah and senior leadership.

    This unique role draws on benefits from the talent, experience, training, and resources offered by both groups.

    Successful performance in the role is demonstrated through development, management, and analysis of complex datasets in support of health system strategy.

    The Data Warehouse Engineer III's day-to-day duties are managed by the Director of Strategy in Health Sciences Strategy.

    The role is also closely tied to the EDW and its employees and leaders which positions the Data Warehouse Engineer III to leverage EDW data assets, security, training, and protocols.

    The Data Warehouse Engineer III receives ongoing support, training, and professional development opportunities as a member of the EDW team.

    Moreover, EDW team members gain valuable experience with the Epic Clarity data model and learn from data architects with extensive knowledge in ETL and big data environments.

    Responsibilities
    Consults with business and technology leaders to understand organization goals.

    Serves as a lead architect in defining and implementing new Enterprise Data Warehouse.

    Establishes and maintains data modeling standards to promote quality model deliverables.

    Performs technical evaluations and proofs-of-concept and present recommendations.

    Recommends architectural changes that maximize system performance, stability, and maintainability.

    Designs and builds logical data models.

    Creates automated reports, dashboards, ETL workflows, and mappings.

    Tunes system performance through SQL tuning, DB optimization, and other strategies.

    Collaborates with junior team members on the technical approach and design for complex problems.

    Oversees the architectural direction of the Business Intelligence platform in order to ensure a cohesive and high performing system.

    Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
    Has significant experience architecting Data Warehouse solutions within Healthcare and or Life Sciences industries.

    In depth knowledge of technique, models, processes, methodologies, and plans within architecture disciplines.

    Excellent understanding of Healthcare industry standards and technology trends.

    Strong database SQL, ETL and data analysis skills.

    Experience with Data Warehouse platform evaluations/selection and experience with Teradata, Netezza, or Greenplum highly desirable.

    Excellent communication skills written, oral, and presentation delivery.

    Ability to present complex technical concepts in terms that are relevant and applicable to HMS business.

    Ability to sell the value of data services to HMS in business terms to promote better information and capabilities for better decision making.

    Qualifications
    Qualifications

    Required
    Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

    Three years of applicable experience.

    Qualifications (Preferred)
    Preferred
    Masters Degree in related field.

    Experience in at least one programming language frequently used in data science or analytics (e.g., Python, R, Java, C#).

    Expertise in database design, data collection and cleaning, dataset integration, and data management.

    A commitment to disciplined coding practices and a passion for developing elegant, maintainable, and modular code. A portfolio (e.g., on GitHub) showcasing relevant, completed projects will be beneficial in assessing qualifications.

    Proficiency in writing SQL queries.

    Familiarity with spatial analysis and visualization techniques.

    Certification as a Certified Analytics Professional (CAP) or Certified Data Management Professionals (CDMP).

    Working Conditions and Physical Demands
    Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.

    The working conditions of the Data Warehouse Engineer III mirrors that of Health Sciences, which currently employs a hybrid work week model in which employees are in the office Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, with the option of working remotely on Wednesdays and Fridays.

    Critical, sometimes mandatory meetings, occasionally require employees to be on site for all or part of the day on Wednesdays and Fridays.

    Expectations and norms related to the hybrid work model may evolve over time and be communicated in advance.

    This is a sedentary position that may exert up to 20 pounds and may lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

    This position involves sitting or standing most of the time and is not exposed to adverseenvironmental conditions.
