    The Opportunity for Financial Affairs Leadership

    The Vice President for Financial Affairs and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of East Texas Baptist University provides stewardship and fiduciary leadership for all aspects of financial management for a growing Christ-centered university.

    The CFO will serve as the senior officer of ETBU responsible for developing, improving, and maintaining the financial systems and business procedures of the University.

    The CFO will be expected to create and maintain systems and processes for managing all sources and uses of funds for ETBU.

    The CFO will serve as a primary financial advisor and leader at ETBU, creating an environment for revenue growth and expenditures.

    The CFO will participate in managing organizational transformation and enhancing a high-demand, results-driven finance culture that positions leaders for institutional success.

    The CFO will provide leadership, management, and supervision of approximately ten (10) employees across the Division of Financial Affairs, including accounting, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, human resources, and risk management.

    The CFO will advise senior management across the University in all matters pertaining to financial sustainability, strategy, and success.
    Responsibilities for Leadership and Stewardship

    Manage and develop Financial Affairs staff and provide cross-departmental collaboration to ensure that financial and human resources systems and solutions support the University's Christ-centered mission.

    Serve with the President and Vice President for Advancement and Administrative Affairs as the University's investment management committee, overseeing the endowment, restricted and temporarily restricted accounts, donor funds, and their performance.

    Establish and maintain sound financial policies, procedures, systems, and controls for the University to ensure that long term sustainability and multi-year financial planning central to the institutional fiscal strategy.

    Manage and oversee all financial functions, including but not limited to, investments, bonds, capital funds, operating cash, credit cards, and other negotiable instruments.

    Review, analyze, and attest to the accuracy of monthly income statements, balance sheet, cash flow projection, and variance reports.
    Provide leadership and oversight of year-end audits and financial statementsto ensure clean financial audits with an unqualified opinion.

    Provide leadership and oversight of the University's compliance programs assuring that the University has the support to remain compliant with all accrediting agencies, state, and federal requirements.

    Work with the President and the University Vice Presidents on the financial planning and analysis on budget development, long-term financial projections, pro forma planning, cost benefit analysis, and school/department/program performance-ROI.

    Provide the President and the Board of Trustees with strategies and analysis on debt and cash management including tactical and innovative ways of funding debt retirement, unfunded scholarship programs, regular and deferred maintenance, capital replacement and renewal, and capital building projects.

    Work with the University auditing firm, accrediting agencies, government and rating agencies on metrics and reporting of the University's financial position.

    Deliver timely reports, including dashboards, to the President, Vice Presidents, departmental budget officers, and the Board of Trustees as needed.

    Serve on the President's Executive Cabinet and on other campus committees as needed.

    Candidate Profile
    The CFO will have the following professional and personal qualifications, skills, qualities, and characteristics:
    Qualifications
    MBA or related master's degree in accounting, business, or related field is required; CPA, CMA, or other certifications preferred.

    Five (5) years working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) with understanding and successful practice of accounting rules, requirements, and practices of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).

    Five (5) years' experience in financial strategic leadership and/or CFO capacity.
    Proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel. Experience with Poise/Jenzabar and Raiser's Edge preferred.
    Strong typing and 10-key skills are necessary to successfully manage time pressures.
    Financial Leadership and Expertise


    Possess senior level experience in thefinancial management of higher education institutions with a deep understanding of the financial compliance and regulatory environment in which private colleges and universities operate.

    Demonstrate anacute adherence to financial oversight while remaining results-focused, adept at translating ETBU's mission, vision, goals, and strategies into a concise financial plan with measurable benchmarks.

    Possess a strong business acumen, with a sophisticated understanding of and ability to analyze and manage a complex and evolving fiscal institutional framework.

    Maintain a strong commitment to enhancing financial systems at ETBU, with the ability to assess complex scenarios and present information in a compelling fashion to a variety of audiences, thereby facilitating the institutional success and advancement.

    Demonstrate a strong understanding of, and the ability to develop financial systems, which can accurately capture transactions and data in a timely manner.

    Apply a data-driven approach to decision making, while demonstrating a willingness to take calculated risks.

    Employ a robust analytical skill set to offer guidance, coaching, and direction to the President and the Vice Presidents as to collaboratively seek solutions for budgetary needs.

    Possess the ability to critically examine details while maintaining focus on the holistic financial health and sustainability of the University.

    Coordinates and leads the month-end and year-end close processes and the annual audit including related reporting requirements.

    Ensure accurate and timely processing of petty cash, weekly check and ACH disbursements, wire transfers, employee payroll, and all other payables.

    Ensure sufficient property/casualty, general liability, other liability insurance and other risk management coverage at all times for all University buildings, properties, capital equipment, events, functions, and officers.

    Approve and/or reviews all bank deposits and merchant account deposits.
    Approve all necessary journal entries and inter-department transfers.

    Develop and manage the University's annual operating budget process and leads the Vice Presidents and senior departmental budget officers toward a budget proposal for the President and Board of Trustees.

    Prepare and present all necessary reports to the Board of Trustees and appropriate committees.

    Work in association with the University Advancement and Financial Aid offices to certify proper awarding and accounting of endowed and non-endowed scholarships.

    Collaborate with multiple third-party vendors to review group health plan, retirement plan, and other benefit offerings to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.

    Periodically reviews current benefits plan and advises the President on recommendations for adoption.

    Exhibit strong communications skills with an effectual ability to convey, verbally and in writing, financial opportunities, processes, strategies, and risks to promote financial health of the University and institutional success.

    Display strategic thinking abilities and focus on processes with demonstrated experience successfully using industry-leading, relevant, and innovative financial methods in turbulent, evolving, complex, or novel situations.

    Review and redesign existing process flows to ensure adequacy of controls and accuracy of data in the financial database system.

    Demonstrate problem solving skills using nuanced, informed, and lasting solutions.
    Model and encourage Financial Affairs staff to effectively garner support and participation from necessary stakeholders.
    Encourage trust and teamwork among team members while adeptly handling change with flexibility and composure.
    Inspire, motivate, and hold accountable faculty and staff to wisely steward all institutional resources.
    Demonstrate a collaborative, open, and inquiring style that emboldens institution-wide commitment, participation, innovation, and stewardship.

    Build and nurture positive and trusting relationships with University employees, external partners, institutional stakeholders, and local/regional community members to facilitate proactive communication and collaboration across all financial functions.

    Be an influential leader with the ability to encourage, elevate, and affirm the effective and efficient performance of the Financial Affairs staff.

    The CFO may be required to work occasional irregular and extended hours during the workweek.

    The CFO is expected to work some nights and weekends to fulfill responsibilities or to represent the University at special events, church and community activities, and outside organization meetings and conferences.


    ETBU expects all faculty and staff to become a part of the University community by participating in activities and events that occur on the campus throughout the year, which may occur during evenings and weekends.
