    Description

    The Physics & Astronomy Department at Hofstra University (
    ) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant or associate professor position with a computational specialty in Physics, Biophysics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics, which includes research with "big data" or large datasets.

    This hire is part of a
    cluster in Big Data and Computational Research in the Natural Sciences, with a total of four positions in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics & Astronomy.

    The department is looking for faculty committed to developing a vibrant research program, teaching, and working with undergraduates. Intra- and extramural research collaborations are strongly recommended.

    In addition to teaching responsibilities, the candidate will be expected to establish a research program that directly involves undergraduates and to seek internal and external grant funding.

    Application materials must discuss projects that involve undergraduates in research or discuss advanced projects for physics majors.

    Hofstra has recently been awarded a $1,000,000 NSF MRI grant to build a high-performance GPU computing cluster to support computation- and data-intensive applications; the candidate will be granted access to this computational resource, and will also be offered startup funding competitive with other large, primarily undergraduate institutions.


    The Department of Physics & Astronomy offers a BA and a BS in Physics, a BS in Applied Physics, a minor in Astronomy, and an MS in Medical Physics.

    The department currently consists of 10 faculty members with strong records in research and teaching. Hofstra University offers startup funding competitive with other large, primarily undergraduate institutions.


    Qualifications

    • PhD in physics, astronomy, biophysics or related field required by time of employment
    • Postdoc and/or industry work experience is desired but not required

    Preferred Quals Summary

    • Openness to collaborate with the computational cohort to develop undergraduate research initiatives
    • Experience teaching undergraduate introductory or advanced courses in physics, astronomy or biophysics

    Salary/Salary Range
    $90,000-$135,000
