    The division of Gastroenterology (GI) provides care for over 10,000 patients each year at the Center for Digestive Diseases.

    GI research include trials specific to digestive health and include conditions and diseases of the liver, pancreas, biliary ducts and digestive tract.

    GI research has ongoing trials for treatment with newer drugs and biologics suing state of the art endoscopy expertise, facilities and equipment.


    Clinical Trials Unit provides resources to enable investigators in the Department of Internal Medicine (DoIM) to successfully conduct their clinical research and further their research careers.

    The CTU is committed to using our capabilities in order to foster collaborative research efforts throughout UNM HSC, UNM Main Campus, and New Mexico.

    We seek to reduce barriers to clinical research for both investigators and participants so that we can serve the entire research community, including minorities and the underserved.


    The Nurse/Clinical Research Coordinator will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams in the Department of Internal Medicine, UNMH, and Clinical & Translational Science Center to oversee and conduct clinical trials.

    The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring the trials are conducted according to Good Clinical Practices and all federal, state, and institutional guidance and regulations.

    The Nurse/Clinical Research Coordinator will also provide technical guidance and training to Research Coordinators, and Research Assistants in the CTU.

    Duties and Responsibilities


    • Collaborates with the study team(s) at UNMH and the Clinical and Translational Sciences Center to arrange for subject enrollment and follow-up visits.
    • Screen and review clinic patients for potential enrollment.
    • Administers prescribed study medications, performs phlebotomy, monitors vital signs, and/or performs other specialized nursing procedures, as appropriate to the specific needs of the study and individual subjects.
    • Ensures that clinical activities are carried out in accordance with established research protocol and standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedural requirements.
    • Monitors and records patient response to treatment, and communicates study data and results to investigators and appropriate members of the study team; maintains complete source documentation and oversees the preparation of study activity reports for sponsors and various medical, legal and regulatory bodies, as appropriate.
    • Attends regular study team and sponsor arranged meetings and provides regular reports on study progress. 10%
    • Train research staff on clinical procedures and implementing clinical trials.
    • Performs miscellaneous job duties as assigned


    The selected candidate must have the ability to work flexible hours, as required by the study and the ability to drive offsite to see patients, as required by the study protocol.

    Conditions of Employment


    • CPR Certified.
    • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
    • May be required to submit immunization records for review for required vaccines and TB testing.
    • Must maintain certification and/or licensure status.
    • May be required to complete department-specific professional development activities.
    • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
    Minimum Qualifications

    Associate's degree in Nursing; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified


    Certification/Licensure:

    State of New Mexico Licensed Registered Nurse or licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the multistate privilege to practice compact with New Mexico.


    Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

    Preferred Qualifications


    • Experience conducting clinical trials
    • Experience recruiting patients to participate in research studies
    • Demonstrated work experience with blood draws, human samples and processing
    • Demonstrated working knowledge of EMR and chart review
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
