Job Overview

This Chicago patent practice supports innovative companies and research-driven organizations across a broad range of industries, with significant exposure to international patent strategy. The team is looking for a Patent Attorney who can contribute immediately to drafting and prosecution work, manage multiple matters efficiently, and communicate technical concepts clearly and persuasively.

Attorneys in this practice work closely with partners and client teams on patent procurement strategy, portfolio development, and prosecution decision-making. The environment is fast-paced, detail-oriented, and well suited for attorneys who want substantive responsibility and a clear path to advancement.

By year-end, you could be owning key portions of patent portfolios, preparing office action responses across multiple jurisdictions, and serving as a go-to resource for complex chemistry-driven inventions.

Key Responsibilities

• Draft and prosecute patent applications through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

• Manage prosecution strategy and communications for domestic and international filings

• Prepare office action responses, claim amendments, and supporting arguments grounded in both law and science

• Support diligence activities, including IP review for transactions, licensing, and related strategic matters

• Manage assignments from multiple partners and clients while maintaining consistent quality and responsiveness

• Coordinate with inventors, in-house counsel, and technical stakeholders to gather invention disclosures and refine claim scope

• Track and meet internal and client-driven deadlines across multiple active matters

• Contribute to continuous improvement of prosecution templates, filing workflows, and best practices

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of patent prosecution experience (2+ years required)

• Registered to practice before the USPTO (USPTO registration required)

• Patent Bar eligible (if not already registered, where applicable—must be eligible)

• Licensed to practice law in the applicable state (as needed for the role)

• Master's Degree or Ph.D. in chemistry, organic chemistry, applied chemistry, polymer science, polymer engineering, biochemistry, or a closely related field

• Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize competing deadlines

• Excellent writing, analytical, and communication skills

• High attention to detail and comfort working under pressure in a fast-paced environment
