Description
The position of the Emergency Management Director and Fire Marshal encompasses a prominent leadership role, focusing on guiding and overseeing a team of emergency management experts responsible for coordinating and supervising activities related to emergency management and fire safety, all aimed at ensuring the safety of Gaston County residents and visitors.
Examples of Duties
The duties listed below are not all of the duties that may be assigned but are those that are considered as essential for an employee to perform.
Function as a central liaison and consultant in times of emergencies, offering specialized knowledge about fire safety and potential hazards related to emergency management to support emergency response teams.
Enforce fire safety codes and regulations at local, state, and federal levels, promoting compliance through educational efforts, inspections, and necessary corrective measures.
Establish and maintain strong working relationships with government agencies, non-profit organizations, community leaders, and other stakeholders to foster a coordinated response to emergencies and disasters.
Develop and implement a comprehensive communication plan to inform and educate the public and stakeholders during emergencies.Effectively allocate resources to oversee and bolster the operations of the EOC, as well as to facilitate emergency response and recovery initiatives, encompassing both personnel and equipment.
Develop and oversee emergency preparedness training and exercises to ensure that county officials, emergency responders, and community members are well-prepared.
Maintain accurate records of emergency incidents, response efforts, and recovery activities for post-incident evaluation and reporting.Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Emergency Management, Public Administration, Public Safety, or a related field
Fifteen (15) years of experience in public safety
Ten (10) years of experience in a public safety leadership role
Valid driver's license
Completion of the following Incident Command System (ICS) courses: ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 300, ICS 400, ICS 700, and ICS 800
Certified Firefighter II
Hazardous Materials Operations (Haz-Mat Ops) certification
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in any field
Level II Inspector Certification
Certified North Carolina Fire Officer or equivalent certification
Certified Fire Investigator
Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) certification
Special knowledge, abilities, skills, physical requirements, and other factors: Thorough knowledge of the four phases of emergency management (mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery).
Must have the physical ability to walk, stand for long periods, climb, bend, stoop, kneel and navigate rough, uneven, or slippery terrain.
Ability to clearly speak andhearing for radio communication. Ability to work for long, extended, and irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, often in adverse weather conditions.

The applicant selected must undergo and pass a drug screening test prior to employment.
