    The Louis S. Wolk Jewish Community Center of Greater Rochester is located alongside the Erie Canal in Brighton and is a 200,000 square foot facility that houses our state-of-the-art fitness, wellness and recreation programming, an aquatics center, a Professional Theatre (live stream), Children's Center and our Premier Camping Program We pride ourselves on providing our members with quality educational, cultural arts and social programming, and we are an inclusive community center that welcomes people of all faiths, backgrounds, and ages.

    The 2024 Summer Days at the J program offers all the fun of a classic day camp. Located on our main campus, we welcome all campers into a safe community of respect and inclusion where each child is encouraged to shine.

    Summer is short and goes by quickly so we are looking for individuals that can commit to working for the remainder of the summer session June 26- August 25.

    Typical work hours are Monday – Friday 8:30am – 5:30pm for the summer session.

    General Job Summary:

    As the primary caregiver for each child in their group, the Head Counselor is responsible for working with 7th and 8th grade campers to build leadership and life skills. This involves planning, teaching, coordinating, carrying out activities and guiding children in their personal growth and daily living skills. The Head Counselor is also a mentor to their co-counselor and coaches their professional development.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Create, organize and facilitate fun and educational activities for assigned camper group
    • Along with training
    • Mentor and guide co-counselors to provide developmental opportunities.
    • Supervise, lead, and organize 10-20 campers while in collaboration with co-counselors.
    • Observe children's behavior, and assess, instruct and guide for appropriateness.
    • Enforce safety regulations regarding both physical and emotional safety. Follow all COVID safety protocols
    • Actively participate in program activities and collaborate with co-counselors to ensure successful programming
    • Assist Program Specialists and maintain control of group during activities
    • Present thoughtful and proactive behavior to be seen as positive role model for all children and staff
    • Supervise the safe and structured arrival and departure of children
    • Provide additional supervision to swim staff during swim times
    • Help keep play areas clean and tidy and ensure proper care of equipment used in activities
    • Attend all School Day at the J events, including staff training, staff meetings, and professional development

    Staff Trainings :

    • Attend Staff Trainings
      • June 24, 25 9am – 1pm (Monday, Tuesday)
      • June am – 5pm (Wednesday-Friday)
    • Once training has concluded, work hours are Monday – Friday 9:00am – 3:00pm
    • Commitment for the full summer session

    Education and Experience:

    • High School Diploma or GED (must be at least 18 years of age)
    • Minimum of 1 year experience working with elementary school aged children
    • Experience in creating and following lesson plans, preferred.

    Certifications:

    • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (will be given opportunity to take certification course)

    • Ability to assist children in an emergency.
    • Possess the strength, endurance and vigilance required to maintain constant supervision of children.
    • Ambulatory ability to manage uneven ground, hills, and steps.
    • Ability to lift a child repetitively weighing between 10-15lbs and occasionally up to 50lbs.
    • Ability to swim in the pool and be active on the playground.
    • Ability to kneel, bend, squat, stand, and sit on the floor or on child-size furniture for prolonged periods of time.

    • Children aged Kindergarten – 6th grade camp group environment
