    Summary of Job

    The Village of Caledonia Fire Department, Racine County, Wisconsin, is seeking highly motivated, dedicated fire service personnel to fill current vacancies for the position of full-time Firefighter/Paramedic. The Caledonia Fire Department (CFD) is an all-hazards career department that provides fire and medical services to the 27,804 residents of the Villages of Caledonia, Wind Point, and North Bay. In 2024 the department will be budgeted for 50 personnel: (1) Fire Chief, (1) administrative assistant, (3) Battalion Chiefs, (9) Lieutenants, and (36) firefighters/EMT basic or paramedics. In 2022 the department responded to 3125 calls for emergency services.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities
    • The firefighter is responsible for fire suppression, fire inspection, vehicle and fire station maintenance, hazardous material response, rescue operations and emergency medical services.
    • Operates and performs maintenance checks on all fire department vehicles and equipment.
    • Responds as a member of a medical team to bring basic or advanced emergency medical care to the citizens of the community.
    • Prepares reports and maintains records under supervision of shift commander/shift officer.
    • Participates in daily training exercises and classroom lectures.
    • Conducts fire inspections in various occupancies in the jurisdiction.
    • Performs duties as a fire apparatus driver and motor pump operator, when assigned.
    • Performs duties as a certified firefighter/EMT according to criteria and standards set forth by the department, when assigned.
    • Responsible for cleanliness of station and maintenance of apparatus, tools, equipment and all other fire department property
    • Conducts demonstrations, tours and public speeches on fire safety, fire prevention, CPR, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, first aid and other subjects to the public
    Qualifications

    Applicants must provide proof of the following:
    (a) Valid Driver's License,
    (b) High School or Equivalency Diploma,
    (c) Valid WI State or National Registry - Paramedic Certification within six months of date of hire. Current students are encouraged to apply.
    (d) State of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter I, State of Wisconsin Certified Firefighter II is required before completing an 18-month probationary period.
    (e) Current Candidate Physical Ability Test Certification (CPAT) within sixty days of date of hire.

    Candidates must successfully pass oral interviews, medical exams, and background investigations. The annual salary for this position is $59,905- $81,635 (steps 1 through 7). State of WI residency is required within three months of completing an 18-month probationary period.

    Health, Dental and Vision Insurance:
    Village of Caledonia contributes 85% of premium cost of Health insurance, 50% of premium costs for Dental family or single coverage for full-time employees and no contribution to Vision insurance (effective on the first of the month following a full calendar month of employment), subject to annual approval by the Village Board.

    Holidays: 10 paid holidays

    Vacation:
    • 1 week after one year of service
    • Two weeks per year after two years of service
    • Three weeks per year after eight years of service
    • Four weeks per year after thirteen years of service
    • Five weeks per year after twenty years of service
    Retirement Benefits:
    Employees are eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) upon hire and meeting WRS eligibility requirements.
    • Wisconsin Retirement System: WRS contribution rates are set annually by WRS, employee and employer contributions to this plan are required. 2021 rates are as follows:
      • General Employees: 6.75 Employer Contribution, 6.75 Employee Contribution
      • Protective Employees: 11.75 Employer Contribution; 6.75 Employee Contribution
  • Deferred Compensation: Village of Caledonia currently makes available to its employees, on a voluntary basis, participation in a deferred compensation plan. Under this plan, each employee may, on a tax-deferred basis, contribute up to 15% (with a maximum annual contribution established by the IRS) of gross earnings. Village provides no contributions to this plan.
  • Life Insurance:
    Village provides a basic term life insurance policy (subject to annual approval by the Village Board). The amount of term insurance provided depends upon the employee's annual salary.

    Disability Insurance:
    Short- and long-term disability coverage is available to employees through payroll deduction at the employee's cost.

    Sick Leave: 1 day (20 hours) per month for each completed month of employment, with a maximum accrued carry-over of 3120 hours.
