General Description

The entry-level Locksmith assists in installing, repairing, and maintaining locks and door hardware to support the safety and security of Hidalgo County employees and the public. This position supports the Master Locksmith and works under the guidance of senior staff.

Examples of Work Performed

Assists with daily locksmith tasks and projects as assigned.

Helps maintain records related to locks, keys, and work performed.

Learns to disassemble and repair various types of locks including padlocks, door locks, and safe locks.

Cuts new or duplicate keys under supervision.

Assists with maintaining the County's set of master keys.

Supports the completion of work orders and ensures tasks are done in a timely manner.

Helps track and organize shop supplies, tools, and equipment.

Assists in estimating basic labor and material needs for small tasks.

Works with other trades and staff to complete assigned projects.

Replaces locks, makes keys, and inspects doors for basic issues.

Assists in reviewing contractor work for quality and compliance.

Participates in walkthroughs for remodels, renovations, and new construction projects.

Follows all safety regulations and participates in safety meetings.

This position includes hardware installations, but is not limited to locks and key devices on doors but also general signage at entryways.

Responsibilities also include designing and installation of labels, directories for wayfinding and signage which is intended for ADA compliance purposes.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university.

* Two (2) years of related experience may be substituted for one (1) year of education.

Three (3) years of skilled locksmith work with supervisory skills.

Exit device, auto door opener and electronic card access training and knowledge preferred.

Experience to include common locksmith duties.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registration

Locksmith Certification preferred.

Must have a current valid Texas motor vehicle operator's license.

Must be able to be insured by the County's insurance carrier.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Basic knowledge of locks, keying systems, and general hardware (or willingness to learn).

Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand tools and power tools.

Ability to troubleshoot and complete minor repairs with guidance.

Ability to read simple diagrams or follow written instructions.

Ability to keep accurate records and maintain organized work areas.

Ability to work independently when instructed and collaborate with coworkers.

Strong communication and customer service skills.

Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
