    Kitchen Table Advisors

    KTA's salaries are guided by our value of equity and are set in accordance with our compensation philosophy, which includes a commitment that the salary ratio between the lowest-paid and the highest-paid staff members will not exceed 1:2.5.


    Work Location:


    Serving Northern and Central California's surrounding counties including, but not limited to: Yolo, Solano, Sacramento, Sonoma, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, Santa Clara, Madera, Stanislaus and surrounding areas.

    This role will require working from KTA's Berkeley office at least twice per month. Applicants must be located in or willing to relocate to one of the regions that we serve.

    Job Overview

    As the Director of Development, you will lead the strategy and operations for Kitchen Table Advisors' multi-faceted development efforts.

    You are responsible for, with the support of a three-person Development team, generating the financial resources to support a $4.5M annual operating budget.

    As part of the Organizational Resourcing team, you provide creative leadership with a focus on organization-wide development strategies, authentic relationship building with funders, and collaborative fundraising with programmatic partners that enables us to fulfill our organization's purpose.

    You will play a key role in building the financial runway to allow us to achieve our mission of fueling the economic viability of a multi-racial next generation of sustainable small farms and ranches in Northern California.

    You will live our organizational values of equity, empathy, transformational leadership, ecological responsibility, and resilience. You will report to the Co-Executive Director of Organizational Resourcing and manage a three-person Development team.

    Responsibilities

    The primary responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
    Development Strategy, Relationship Building, and Fund Management (40%)

    Informed by our strategic plan, design and lead a diversified fund development strategy, in collaboration with the Development Team.

    Lead development of long-term revenue projections, including understanding financial statements, weighting opportunities, and tracking opportunities in their viability path to sustain a projected annual operating budget of $4.5M in 2025.

    Cultivate and maintain a portfolio of 3-5 strategic funder relationships with leadership gifts (>$250K), complementing the work of our Partnership Managers.

    Coach and support Development team members in creating and implementing engagement strategies for specific donor segments (individuals, foundations, corporations, and government) that contribute to annual revenue goals, including, but not limited to, 1:1 relationships, in-person and virtual events, grants, and digital campaigns.

    Lead the Fundraising Task Force of the Kitchen Cabinet to engage advisory board members in designing and implementing the development strategy; support the evolution of this group as KTA becomes an independent 501c3.

    Lead, in collaboration with the Program Directors, collaborative fundraising efforts with programmatic partners including: leading the development of proposals, managing related reporting for both governmental awards and fee for service contracts, serving as a primary liaison between our fiscal sponsor Multiplier, Program, and Operations teams, and partner organizations.

    Regularly attend events to represent Kitchen Table Advisors and build community with values-aligned individuals and community partners.
    Proactively mitigate organizational risk as it pertains to Development, and collaborate with the crisis response team as necessary.
    Manage Development budget, and lead problem solving for this budget in the event of unexpected crises or threats to organizational health and well-being (e.g. budget shortfalls, staff challenges, external partnership conflicts);
    Based on an understanding of team needs, ensure consistency and ease in operations of Development systems and tools (e.g. users guides, Airtable bases, etc.).

    Cross-Organizational Collaboration (30%)


    Work with Program Directors to ground in the experiences of our clients and ecosystem projects in order to inform the development strategies and outcomes.

    Explore and develop emergent opportunities for resource organizing in direct service of clients and ecosystem projects.

    Meet regularly with the Communications team to review Development and Communications strategies and activities to ensure that prioritization, alignment and execution are meeting organizational vision and need.

    Work with the Operations team to design and implement internal systems, workflows, and processes that ensure development and financial management information is accessible across the organization;

    Meet regularly with the Co-Executive Directors to discuss and prioritize emergent opportunities to mobilize and generate resources that support KTA's strategic plan and vision.

    Work with the People & Culture Director to ensure that management of the Development team is consistent and in alignment with organizational needs and values.

    Participate in team meetings and retreats; and shared leadership activities including team meeting facilitation, note-taking, etc.;
    Participate in interview processes for new team members, as needed;
    Perform regular administrative tasks in a timely manner, including time sheets, expense reports, meeting scheduling, etc.

    Staff Management (30%)

    Supervise the following team members:
    Partnership Manager, Major Giving; Partnership Manager, Institutional Giving; and Development Associate.

    Support the growth and development of team members: mentor and encourage; serve as a thought partner around professional development, perform a regular cadence of performance reviews; create a regular cadence of 1:1 check-ins.

    Manage a team of staff, contractors, and volunteers to support the execution of development strategy and fundraising efforts;
    For all team members, support the creation and execution of work plans; provide, as needed, timely feedback to support team members' growth; approve timesheets and expense reimbursements

    Qualifications

    We recognize that each applicant will bring unique skills, knowledge, experiences, and background to this position.

    We welcome diverse experiences and perspectives in our applicant pool, and will be looking for candidates who possess many, but not necessarily all, of the following qualifications and experience:
    10+ years of relevant professional experience in fund development across diverse revenue sources, collaborative fundraising, and program-centered storytelling.
    Proven ability to successfully fundraise $2.5 million or more to support purpose-driven organizations.

    5+ years of leadership and supervision experience, including experience working with independent, high-performing direct reports, and ability to effectively delegate.

    Strong networks and relationships with philanthropic and nonprofit partners, particularly in the sustainable agriculture and food systems community in Northern California.

    Demonstrated ability to successfully leverage data and analytics to support effective development strategies.
    Proactive, can work independently while staying connected to the organization

    Excellent listener and relationship builder, demonstrated success in managing relationships 1:1 and as a part of a larger network of contacts and point people.

    Ability to see the big picture and connect the dots, as well as get into the weeds on implementation
    Ability to stay organized, move multiple projects and priorities forward simultaneously, and constantly reprioritize
    Experience building trusted relationships with communities who have historically been excluded from resources and recognition within our food system
    Access to a vehicle and ability to drive to team events and conferences
    Ability to work nights and weekends, on occasion, as needed for events
    Preferred lived experience and/or cultural competency that enables understanding of diverse spectrum of clients
    English/Spanish bilingual preferred

    Travel and Schedule Considerations

    Due to the nature of the work, candidates must possess a valid driver's license, with access to a vehicle, for periodic travel throughout Northern California to meet with staff and partners.

    There will be occasional work responsibilities that occur during the evenings and/or weekends.
