- Degree: Certificate.
- Education: Completion of a central sterile supply training course.
- Certification: Current certification by the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Materials Management or current certification by the National Institute of Health Care Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel.
- Processing and decontamination involve all the actions required prior to sterilizing and issuance.
- Assemble, package, wrap, and sterilize the medical supply items, and distribute supply items used for patient care in hospital wards and clinics.
- Knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including, cleaning techniques, sterilization mediums, tests to determine effectiveness of sterilization, and packaging, storage, and shelf-life characteristics.
- Become familiar with hospital/clinic layout, staffing, and operations and the integration of the sterile supply operation into the total health care program to adequately supply the hospital wing.
- Have an awareness of the relative cost of the various items used in the wing to take necessary precautions with costly equipment.
- Ability to communicate both orally and in writing in a clear, concise, and well organized manner.
- Must have experience in word processing and be computer literate.
