    In addition to the base salary above


    Employees assigned to a permanent duty station in King County will receive five 5% Premium Pay calculated from their base salary.

    Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10% for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.

    If hired as bilingual (not required), after passing an assessment of your ability to write and speak fluently. We do not use translating software. Employees with bilingual responsibilities receive a 5% increase in pay.

    L&l's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) administers a Consultation Program which offers confidential, no-fee, professional advice and assistance to Washington businesses.

    These services can help Washington state employers find and fix hazards in the workplace and strengthen their safety program.


    The Occupational Safety & Health Professional 3 (OSHPR03) - Industrial Hygienist Specialist position plays an important role in achieving the mission of DOSH Consultation by applying advanced knowledge in independently conducting highly complex workplace consultations specifically focusing on Industrial Hygiene safety and resolving the most complex, critical, or precedent-setting issues that arise in the workplace by sampling and evaluation of different hazards to include but not limited to asbestos, mold, chemical exposure, indoor air quality, emergency response, confined spaces, and ergonomics.

    This position supports the agency's mission to "Keep Washington Safe and Working" because the work directly impacts the health and safety of Washington's workers.


    These on-site consultations provide assistance to employers in establishing and implementing safety and health programs designed to meet the Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Standards and in understanding their obligations under the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA).


    The OSHPRO3-IH performs individually or as a member of a full-service consultation team and works on the most complex evaluations of employer safety and health programs, recommends hazard controls to prevent injuries and illnesses, develops and gives training on specific safety and health topics and provides training and mentoring to other Industrial Hygiene, Safety, and Risk Management Specialists in the region.

    They also ensure verification of the correction of serious hazards identified during on-site consultations.

    For this position, telework is permitted dependent upon business needs and supervisor approval. The assigned duty station for this position is Seattle, Washington. May require use of a personally owned vehicle (POV)*. Some overnight travel may be required.


    • While driving a state vehicle or personally owned vehicle (POV) for state business an employee must have a valid unrestricted driver license and may not have convictions for driving under the influence or driving offense that endangered or harmed others within the past 7 years. Individuals driving POVs for state business if a state vehicle is not available, must receive permission in advance to use their POV, and possess and show proof of personal liability insurance.

    Some of what you'll do:

    • Conduct senior-level onsite Industrial Hygiene consultations, independently or as part of a consultation team, for employers emphasizing small businesses in high-hazard, fixed industries and construction.
    • Perform complex safety and health surveys and audits to identify, evaluate and recommend controls for occupational health hazards, including chemical, biological, and physical hazards.
    • Perform opening conferences according to DOSH policies with employer and employee representatives.
    • Interact with Employer representatives and Employee representatives to establish the nature, purpose, and procedures of the consultation.
    • Advise employers of methods to eliminate unsafe work practices including ergonomic hazards, applying the hierarchy of controls.
    • Research accident and injury records for specific industries and employers.
    • Evaluate worksites and assist employers in developing required safety and health written programs.
    • Use industrial hygiene sampling equipment and techniques for analysis and measurement of noise, non-ionizing radiation, vibration, temperatures, and chemical exposure for comparison with exposure limits.
    • Submit samples and reports to laboratory.
    • Perform industrial hygiene calculations and analyze and reports on survey results and laboratory data.
    • Critically evaluate use of protective methods including use of personal protective equipment, safe work practices, and engineering controls using instruments as required.
    • Conduct closing conferences with employer and employee representatives and safety personnel covering the survey conducted, the findings, and the minimum standards which must be met through remedial measures.
    • Provide guidance and recommendations for abatement and provides materials to assist with compliance.
    • Ensure employers pursue timely abatement of hazards identified, follow up to check progress and effectiveness of changes instituted.
    • Promote DOSH Consultation services.
    • Conduct marketing efforts with businesses and at trade shows, conferences, and seminars.
    • Maintain industrial hygiene sampling equipment and PPE, ensuring all sampling equipment is in good working order, pre and post calibration is fully charged and ready for use.
    • Ensure all PPE is in good and safe working condition.
    • Develop and present workshops and training programs.

    REQUIRED:

    • Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver license.
    • Detection of Occupational Health Hazards-Skilled in sampling and direct measuring techniques for chemical, biological and physical occupational health hazards.
    • Coursework-Industrial Hygiene-Successful completion of college-level coursework in Industrial Hygiene.
    • Knowledge of Safety and Health Rules and Regulations-Possession of a thorough understanding of both WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety and Health Administration) and OSHA (federal government's Occupational Safety and Health Administration) industrial hygiene related rules and regulations. Understands and is able to explain to customers what their businesses must do to comply with occupational health regulations.



    AND
    one of the following:


    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or closely related field

      AND
      four years of experience as an industrial hygienist.
    OR


    • A Master's degree involving major study in industrial hygiene or related field

      AND
      two years of paid industrial hygiene professional experience.

    DESIRED:

    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • Three years of experience conducting training and delivering presentations to large groups.
    • Three years of experience leading complex consultations or inspections.
    • Bilingual preferred.
    What we are looking for in the ideal applicant:


    • Skilled in sampling and direct measuring techniques for chemical, biological and physical occupational health hazards.
    • Minimum three years of full-time industrial hygiene experience which must include broad experience in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and management of occupational health hazards (chemical, physical & biological).
    • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely through oral presentations, individual consultations, and written and telephone correspondence.
    • Confident, outgoing skills to actively market and sell consultation services to employers.
    • Competitive spirit; likes to excel and do her/his best; works on strengthening and perfecting individual performance.
    • Takes initiative to improve processes for efficiency, safety and productivity.
