    Salary Range:
    Up to $63,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

    Essential Functions

    Job Summary


    To provide master-level skills and expertise in the maintenance, preventive maintenance, remodeling, repair, servicing, and operation of the University's electrical systems from 24 volts up to and including 13,800 volts.

    Assembles, installs, and repairs circuitry switchgear, distribution systems, and all related components. Plans layout and installs wiring for electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.

    Responsible for the prompt, skilled, and proper operation, installation, maintenance, evaluation, and repair of electrical-related systems rated p to 15 kV.

    Frequently responsible for the supervision of semi-skilled workers. Trains Electrician III on switching procedures of medium voltage switchgear.

    Core Responsibilities


    • Runs conduit, pulls wire, and installs and repairs electrical circuits.
    • Performs electrical work related to air conditioning and refrigeration.
    • Performs service calls and work orders submitted by students, faculty, staff, and departments within the university including maintaining records, and performing preventive maintenance work up to and including 13,800 volts.
    • Trains Electrician III on switching procedures for medium voltage switchgear.
    • Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components using testing instruments such as megohmmeter.
    • Diagnoses electric systems to detect and repair malfunctions.
    • Monitors the functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and the need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
    • Assists and consults with outside contractors on electrical specifications and guidance concerning the remodeling, repair, and building of new structures.
    • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
    • Organizes new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring.
    • Ensures consistency with specifications and local electrical codes.
    • Prepares sketches showing the location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings, and flooring. Prepares labor and material estimates for new electric projects.
    • Installs, maintains, repairs, and modifies electrical systems including 13,800-volt primary to 480/277-volt transformers, and 480-volt to 208/120-volt transformers.
    • Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels from 24 volts up to and including 13,800 volts, and train lesser skilled personnel on these higher voltage systems.
    • Maintains updates on current changes in operational procedures, new equipment, and other related equipment.
    • Works in conjunction with other trades, and staff personnel in support of daily job tasks and informs appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies and takes appropriate actions.
    • Troubleshoots electrical system problems following detailed operational and maintenance procedures.
    • Performs installation and maintenance of existing electrical systems, new constructions, and special events.
    • Maintains advanced knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and appropriately interprets and applies it.
    • Assists in the design and construction of electrical systems.
    • Leads, performs with, and gives direction to skilled or unskilled workers and maintenance workers.
    • Supervises and coordinates activities in conjunction with and in the absence of the immediate supervisor and manages projects and workload assignments as required.
    • Installs, maintains, operates, repairs, and modifies electrical systems including, but not limited to, electrical motors, variable frequency drives, electrical control systems, generators, transformers, and laboratory equipment.
    • Performs preventative or corrective maintenance and detailed inspection of electrical, mechanical, and related systems.
    • Operates, performs preventative maintenance, and otherwise maintains 15kV switchgear and distribution, including central substation and primary distribution loops.
    • Generates reports and assists in preparing estimates and special projects.
    • Promotes safe and environmental protection by immediately reporting unsafe situations, spills, and accidents; following University safety plans/procedures/protocols; and participating in appropriate safety training.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Required Qualifications


    • High school graduate or equivalent.
    • Current Journeyman or Master Electrician License from the State of Texas.
    • Valid Texas Driver's License.
    • Ten (10) years of journeyman or master-level commercial/industrial electrical experience.
    • Five (5) years of demonstrated skill and hands-on experience in either terminating, troubleshooting, repairing, or operating medium-voltage equipment.
    • Advanced knowledge of National Electric Code, and state and local building codes.
    • Knowledge of medium-voltage terminating, troubleshooting, repairing, cable splicing, or operating equipment.
    • Knowledgeable in medium-voltage safety protocols.
    • Operating knowledge of power tools and trade hand tools.
    • Operating knowledge of electrical meters and locators, and diagnostic equipment to repair, install, replace, and test electrical circuits, equipment, and appliances.
    • Operating knowledge of high lifts, bucket trucks, boom trucks, and man lifts.
    • Knowledge of energy-efficient equipment and products.
    • Ability to install and maintain motors, welding equipment, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers as appropriate to the position.
    • Ability to diagnose and repair electrical controls, industrial motor control centers, programmable logic controllers, and VFDs.
    • Ability to operate a forklift and a scissor lift.
    • Advanced electrical installation, troubleshooting, construction, and maintenance skills.
    • Ability to isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors, and other electrical equipment.
    • Ability to install and maintain motors, lighting fixtures, generators, circuit breakers, and transformers.
    • Ability to read commercial electrical blueprints and apply NEC through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.
    • Ability to work well individually and as part of a team.
    • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Ability to keep up-to-date technically and apply new knowledge to the job. Includes adapting to and mastering new system applications and processes as implemented by the district or department.
    • Ability to communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from various educational backgrounds.
    • Ability to stay current with university policy, standards, and training in the areas of data quality, data privacy, and cybersecurity for student and staff data, and related information systems.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Ten (10) years of demonstrated skill and hands-on experience in either terminating, troubleshooting, repairing, or operating medium-voltage equipment.

    Working Conditions


    Working Environment:

    • Variable environments including indoor and outdoor locations.
    • Exposed to various mechanical, electrical, laboratories, and other university spaces.
    • Exposure to potential occupational hazards including toxic, biological, and chemical hazards within certain laboratory spaces.
    • Exposure to a variety of construction and physical plant hazards including medium-voltages (15KV), confined spaces, elevated heights, dust & dampness, high noise levels, outside weather, and energized equipment & systems.
    • Exposure to elevated levels of noise.
    • Required to wear personal protective equipment when needed, including steel toe or non-slip shoes, eye protection, hard hat, back belt, body harness, biological protective gear, ear muffs or plugs, respirator, and arc flash protection.
    • Must wear and properly maintain uniforms.
    • Required to be on stand-by call status, carrying a pager, cell phone, or a two-way radio as assigned, and respond to after-hours emergency calls.
    • Required to be on stand-by call status for overtime, evenings, after hours, odd hours, shift work, weekends, and/or holidays as needed. Flexibility in scheduling may be required.

    Physical Demands:

    • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
    • Ability to climb ladders and stairways and work on building rooftops of high elevation.
    • Ability to work in confined spaces such as ceiling, under-floor crawlspaces, and manholes.
    • Reaching overhead, at or below shoulder level.
    • Repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
    • Operating machinery and/or power tools.
    • Visual acuity is required to perform activities such as operating machines like lathes, drill presses, power saws, and mills where the tasks are performed at or within arm's reach. Includes performing mechanical or skilled trade tasks of a non-repetitive nature, such as those carried out by carpenters, technicians, service personnel, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc.
    • Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, and/or use repetitive motions.
    • Medium work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • Ability to work in a minimum 40 Cal arc flash suit for a prolonged period.
    This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
