Description
ModernVivo ) is looking for a Head of Engineering to join us our company's first hire. We are an emerging venture-backed startup developing a B2B software suite that helps life sciences companies design optimized preclinical animal models to improve clinical success, accelerate project timelines, and reduce development costs.
You will join the company as an IC reporting to the CTO but should expect to manage future engineering hires as we continue to scale our engineering team. This is an exciting responsibility to lead and set in place the practices and paradigms of your ideal engineering team. This hire will include significant a equity plan given our stage and your responsibilities and contributions to the company, and your base compensation will scale as we continue to fundraise. We are WFH flexible. We appreciate you spending time in the office when necessary but aren't sticklers about it. However, relocating to Seattle is a hard requirement.
Responsibilities:
Establish Leadership and Strategy: Develop and implement a cohesive technology strategy that aligns with the company's business goals and growth objectives. Lead the technology team, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. Work closely with the CTO to guide the company's technical direction.
Contribute to Technology Development: Oversee the design and development of our Python AI backend, Django web backend, and NextJS frontend. Ensure the platform scales effectively to meet increasing user demands and business growth. Lead major architectural improvements and system enhancements.
Build, Manage, and Mentor a Stellar Engineering Team: You should be prepared to hire, mentor, and develop skilled technology professionals. Establish and manage an environment conducive to high productivity and collaboration while maintaining work-life balance.
Own Longer-term Technical Projects: You will contribute to attaining and maintaining SOC2 and GDPR certification, as well as managing regular pen testing and tabletop exercises.
Collaborate with Stakeholders: Communicate and work closely with customers to align our technology initiatives with their needs.
Base Qualifications:
Engineering experience with a strong background in software development and team management for B2B SaaS applications.
Expertise in Python, GCP, PSQL, and other relevant technologies.
Experience deploying or utilizing LLMs in production environments.
Demonstrated interest in entrepreneurship and startups.
Demonstrated interested in life sciences and drug discovery.
Strong understanding of database management, cloud platforms, and system architecture.
Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.

Nice to Haves:
2+ years of experience as a Head of Engineering, VP of Engineering, or similar role within a company with less than 5 employees.
Demonstrated research experience through publications in computer science, machine learning, life sciences, etc.
Experience in research or software development in drug discovery/life sciences.
Compensation:
We are an early-stage startup. The compensation range for this role will be between $75,000 and $85,000 per year, which you can expect to grow as we continue to fundraise. Given that you will be our first hire, this role will come with a substantial equity plan.
