    Full Job Description

    We are looking for a Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the physician and support staff in providing care to their patients. Their duties include recording and updating medical histories and contact information in patient files, scheduling patient appointments and performing standard care procedures like drawing blood, checking vitals or collecting lab samples.

    Essential Functions

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to adequately perform each essential function. The candidate should be detail-oriented, as they must enter all patient data accurately in their records so doctors and insurance companies can refer to them. Medical Assistants should also have interpersonal skills so they can work with patients who may be in pain.

    Administration:

    • Greets clients/patients at reception desk or counter; assists them in completing necessary documents and applications, answering routine questions and providing information; interviews clients/patients to gather basic health related information, such as health status, living conditions, diet, residency, mobility, parenting skills, health care needs, etc.; registers clients/patients using related computer information at time of appointment; monitors client/patient behavior in the waiting room.
    • Obtains medical history and chief complaint, including allergies; assists patients in ambulation and transfer; maintains medical charts and schedules appointments for staff.
    • Performs routine medical data clerical tasks, typing, personal computer data input, filing, answering phones, etc; inventories supply needs and helps obtain medical and office supplies.

    Clinical:

    • Prepares patients for examination, including positioning, draping, shaving, and disinfecting treatment sites; collects and records patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, blood pressure, and basic information about present and previous conditions; provides patient information and instructions as directed by medical staff.
    • Performs routine clinical procedures: Taking vital signs, administering medications (oral, sublingual, topical, vaginal, rectal, inhalation) or providing a single dose to a patient for self-administration; applying and removing bandages and dressings; applying orthopedic appliances; removing casts and splints; selecting and adjusting crutches, instructing on proper crutch use; performing simple or automated visual testing, obtaining, but not interpreting, results; removing sutures or staples from superficial incisions or lacerations; performing phlebotomy for blood draw or transfusion, as directed.
    • Performs ear lavage to remove impacted cerumen; assist with collection of non-invasive specimens such as urine, sputum, semen and stool; performs screening tests, e.g., electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram, plethysmography, performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) waived laboratory tests such as occult blood, pregnancy, sedimentation rates, hemoglobin, urinalysis and glucose screening; following specific training provided by authorized medical staff, administers intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections.

    • Demonstrated ability to communicate well with colleagues, supervisors and clients.

    Supervisory Requirements

    • This position reports directly to the Practice Manager and has no supervisory functions.

    Minimum Qualifications

    1. Option 1:
    • Education: Completion of a certification program in Medical Assisting. Completion of a Medical Assistant certification program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or from an institution accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) is preferred.
    • Experience: Six months performing basic administrative or clinical duties, as a Medical Assistant in a physician's or dental office (hospital or health center is preferred). Additional Qualifications
    • Language: Proficiency in speaking and writing in English and Spanish
    1. Option 2:
    • Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate. (One year of additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education.)
    • Experience: One year of experience performing front office/back office support duties as a Medical Assistant in a physician's or dental office, hospital, health center, etc.
    • Knowledge of: Relevant medical terminology; basic patient care and/or administrative techniques; medical assisting skills and the various types of materials and equipment related to outpatient care and their applications; methods of conducting or assisting patients (per medical care provider's instructions) with basic tests and treatments performed at an ambulatory care clinic; basic needs and problems of disadvantaged groups: the causes and treatment of medical and/or public health problems and the problems facing the educationally and economically disadvantaged.
    • Ability to: Communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain good relations with a wide range of social and ethnic groups as well as professional staff and community members; obtain and record accurate patient information, and perform routine clinical procedures; follow and implement activities according to written standardized procedures; perform clerical tasks such as utilizing personal computer for inputting pertinent client/patient information, answering phones, filing, etc. Possession of a valid certification in Phlebotomy is preferred.
    • Language: Proficiency in speaking and writing in English and Spanish
    • Possession of a valid certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support/Cardio-Respiratory Resuscitation (BCLS/CPR) is preferred.
