    Non-Tenure Track Faculty Opening in the Department of Statistics at Rice University

    Position Description

    The Data to Knowledge (D2K) Lab, housed in the Department of Statistics at Rice University, located in Houston, TX, seeks applications for one teaching-track professor position with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2024. The D2K Lab is a center within the George R. Brown School of Engineering with a mission of providing students with immersive, experiential learning opportunities in data science. D2K achieves this by enhancing data-intensive research at Rice and building partnerships with companies, institutions, and community organizations that have a need for data-driven solutions. The D2K Lab offers a series of curricular and co-curricular programs and events for students that connect them to real-world data science problems from partners and clients. The D2K Lab also works closely with other departments across the University, especially the School of Engineering, and all D2K Lab experiential learning courses are being embedded into existing or newly created academic programs and degrees.

    Candidates with industry experience or strong applied data science research experience in the areas of health care and biomedical research, social science and public policy, energy, finance, or technology are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will have: an excellent teaching record or show promise as an excellent teacher; knowledge or experience in applying recent evidence-based advances in pedagogical practice for data science; a reputation for or show potential for becoming a pedagogical leader in data science; an interest in performing service at the department level.

    Primary duties specific to D2k teaching faculty include: teaching or team-teaching existing experiential learning courses and/or traditional (lecture-style) data science courses offered at the undergraduate or graduate level. Additional duties include development of new D2K experiential learning courses or other data science courses is also expected. Faculty should expect to build and to foster partnerships with industry, the public sector, the medical center, and other academic institutions by helping to develop client-sponsored data science projects. The role requires mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds as they work on client-sponsored data science projects; conduct research in data science education; develop data science software; and perform service with the D2K Lab and academic departments in support of data science education.

    Qualifications
    All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Statistics or a related field conferred by the year employment commences and professional experience consistent with the position rank. All applicants should demonstrate excellence in scholarship, teaching, and collegial service.
