    Summary Description:
    The Dean functions as the unit's chief academic administrator.

    As the Provost's representative to the department chairs, the Dean enacts the University's strategic vision, articulating the means to attaining its mission, goals, and purpose.


    Essential Functions:

    • As an intentionally Christian academic community, Christian employees are hired to advance the mission of Carson-Newman as expressed in our strategic plan, Acorns to Oaks.
    • The Dean plays a key role in leading the School of Business and Family and Consumer Sciences in a diverse and competitive environment. The Dean oversees creating new and relevant programs in a variety of delivery models (face-to-face, hybrid, on-line), building external relationships with the business and financial community, promoting teaching excellence and scholarly activities, and recruiting outstanding faculty and students. The Dean is also responsible for the management and oversight of undergraduate and any graduate programs offered within the school, ensuring that the educational programs and curriculum stay relevant and responsive to the ever-changing needs of students and employers.
    • The Dean will have a track record of demonstrated success in Christian liberal arts-based education and have a strong sense of the overarching challenges and opportunities facing higher education. The Dean should be experienced in setting strategic agendas and working with faculty and staff to launch new initiatives in ways that support enrollment efforts.
    • The Dean is expected to be an active, engaged partner with the executive leadership team and fellow deans as the University continues to pursue strategies that strengthen its mission and ability to serve students. S/he should have a strong commitment to supporting faculty and staff while placing a high value on professional development. S/he should be an excellent communicator; s/he should be able to partner internally with administrators and departments across campus as well as externally with the surrounding community and state and national groups. Above all, the Dean must be highly student-centered, embody Christian faith in practice, possess an appreciation for liberal arts-based education, and support the mission of Carson-Newman University.
    • The Dean of the School provides leadership to full-time faculty and staff and leads the school through academic leadership, curriculum development and other program advancement; faculty research; accreditation; budget and resource development; assessment and evaluation; continuous quality improvement; and the recruitment, retention, and mentoring of faculty, staff, and students
    • Carson-Newman University deans teach between two and four courses per year, serve under a 12-month faculty contract and appointment letter, and report to the Provost

    Education:


    Master's degree and significant professional experience or earned doctorate in an appropriate field from a regionally accredited institution, preferably Accounting or Early Childhood Education.


    Experience:


    Demonstrated innovative program or department leadership in curricular and program development, experience in both teaching and administration at the collegiate level with at least 5 years of academic leadership experience preferred at the department chair or dean level.


    Required Skills:


    Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders, able communicator in written and verbal communication, able to organize, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
