    Summary



    This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

    This Pain Psychologist position is administratively aligned with the Behavioral Medicine program of the Mental Health Service (MH) at VA Boston Healthcare System (VABHS). The psychologist will serve as an integrated care mental health provider in the multidisciplinary Pain Clinic using a co-located, collaborative model. The psychologist will provide brief, evidence-based assessments and interventions (individual and group) and education for Veterans to address chronic pain, and education and consultation for Pain Clinic medical providers and allied team members. In addition, the psychologist will work collaboratively within the Pain Clinic to promote prevention, brief assessment, early identification, and treatment of mild to moderate mental health conditions and health behavior concerns.

    Clinical Responsibilities .

    • Provides a full range of assessment and treatment planning services including clinical interviewing and psychometric assessment for veterans who are coping with chronic pain.
    • Provides full range of interventions for Veterans coping with chronic pain, including evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy for chronic pain.
    • Provides a range of brief evidence-based interventions to address conditions that are often comorbid with chronic pain (e.g., depression, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD).
    • Provides a range of behavioral health interventions that promote healthy lifestyle, medical adherence, adjustment to and adaptive coping with the chronic health condition.
    • May assist in behavioral health care of non-pain patients with physical disorders and/or health promotion needs.
    • In collaboration with the interdisciplinary pain treatment team, develops an empirically-based, best-practice model of non-pharmacological care for the evaluation and cognitive behavioral treatment of patients with chronic pain.
    • Works collaboratively with other team members to ensure high quality, effective Veteran-centered services at both patient and programmatic levels.
    • Completes all clinical charting and documentation required by local and national guidelines (e.g., assessment reports, progress notes) in a timely manner. Documentation is optimized for collaboration with the Pain Clinic Team.
    • Provides behavioral health consultation to Pain Clinic staff.
    • Participates in Pain Clinic team huddles and meetings to cultivate collaborative team functioning and serves as subject matter expert for behavioral health considerations.
    • Attends other staff and organizational meetings (e.g., Psychology meetings, other clinically relevant team functions).
    • Participates in program evaluation (e.g., as required by funding initiative for the positions; collection of pre- and post- outcome measure data for individual and group interventions).
    • May consult with mental health and other medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues and collaborate to resolve issues related to coordination of care.
    • May assist in program management.
    • Conducts additional direct care activities as needed/requested by Mental Health or Psychology leadership.
    • Works in compliance with local and national performance measures.
    Academic/Teaching/Training

    - The psychologist may be eligible for a faculty appointment at Boston University School of Medicine or Harvard Medical School.

    -. The psychologist will play an active role in training, including the provision of clinical supervision to psychology or multidisciplinary trainees and didactic education.

    - The psychologist will be a regular consumer of research relevant to the conduct provision of evidence-based evaluation and treatment of patients, as well as supervision of trainees. The psychologist may be allotted time for research activities.
