    JOB SUMMARY

    The Department of Public Works (DPW) at Black Rock City is looking for an Organic Waste Assistant Manager. This role involves overseeing waste collection and sorting operations at the Black Rock City Staff Commissary, managing the crew, maintaining facility cleanliness, and ensuring materials transportation and handling are done safely. The position also entails supporting resource coordination, process documentation, and promoting best waste-sorting practices among staff during event production.

    DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Review current SOPs, plans, and inventory requirements.
    • Assist with setting up and dismantling the Organics Collection Station and remote recycling points.
    • Coordinate daily operations and material handling.
    • Work with management on the layout and function of the central station.
    • Oversee the Transfer Station Crew in sorting waste streams.
    • Maintain safety standards and cleanliness.
    • Communicate effectively with stakeholders and attend meetings.
    • Manage fleet vehicles and assets.
    • Train crew members on equipment use and safety.
    • Submit accurate staff working hours and payroll entries.
    • Assist in developing SOPs and job descriptions.
    • Document processes for training purposes.
    • Participate in DPW Manager Meetings.
    • Communicate issues promptly to the Manager.
    • Adhere to Burning Man's policies and protocols.
    • Engage in cost reduction and sustainability practices.
    • Attend Burning Man event in Gerlach, Nevada.

    LEARNING AND TEACHING

    • Drive the creation and maintenance of process documentation.
    • Take a leadership role in acculturation and staff training.
    • Mentor subordinates in advancing within the organization.
    • Pursue ongoing learning in relevant areas.
    • Represent Burning Man as a subject matter expert.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required:

    • Strong leadership and organizational skills.
    • Experience in waste management and resource recovery.
    • Knowledge of Burning Man values and principles.
    • Effective at task switching and time-management.
    • Ability to problem solve and remain calm under pressure.
    • Experience in team management and strong communication skills.
    • Behavioral integrity and detail-oriented.
    • Working knowledge of Google products.
    • Clear communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Capability to work in extreme conditions.
    • Ability to relocate for work during the Burning Man event.

    Preferred:

    • Previous experience with Burning Man or similar operations.
    • OSHA 10 Certification.
    • Leadership experience in event-based production work.
    • Skills in facilitating team meetings and mediation.
    • Basic carpentry skills.

    REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

    • Valid driver's license with a good record.

    COMPENSATION

    The expected pay rate for this position ranges from $17.00 to $20.00 per hour.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Off-playa work is primarily sedentary.
    • On-playa work involves physical activities in varying weather conditions.
