    Job Description:

    Experienced in health literacy and the transformation of medical concepts into simplified plain language, the Medical Editor for the Health Education, Engagement and Promotion (HEEP) department will be responsible for developing, creating, and editing patient education content for tone, flow, and clarity. A critical thinker, this individual will apply AMA style, consistent with the HEEP style guide, to drive the editorial direction of high-quality, patient education. A team player, this individual will also work closely with clinical teams, as well as creative and technical leads.

    • Employee Expectations:
    • Employees are required to adhere to all Joint Commission standards, which encompass a range of areas including cultural diversity awareness, patient care quality, ethical conduct, safety and security protocols, emergency management, ongoing education, and compliance with National Patient Safety Goals. Additionally, maintaining up-to-date licensure and health screenings is essential.
    • Content Development Responsibilities:
    • As part of our team, you will be responsible for writing, developing, copying, and editing patient education content for Stanford Health Care. Emphasizing health literacy strategies is crucial in this role.
    • You'll guide the content creation process, ensuring that projects move from concept to completion while meeting brief requirements and deadlines.
    • Collaborating with clinical teams across Stanford Health Care settings, you'll assess and manage patient education requests.
    • Consistency in messaging and tone across all communication channels and touchpoints is a priority.
    • You'll also lead initiatives to enhance existing content.
    • Providing mentorship and guidance to fellow writers, including freelance contributors, is part of your role.
    • Drawing from a solid understanding of best practices in health patient education, you'll contribute effective solutions and optimize content structure.
    • Leveraging research, insights, data, and trends, you'll inform writing guidelines and make confident creative choices.
    • In our fast-paced environment, you'll manage multiple projects simultaneously, collaborating effectively with cross-functional team members to drive continual improvement.

    Must Haves:

    Education Qualifications

    • BA or equivalent required, preferably in health sciences or health education.

    Experience Qualifications

    • Five (5+) years professional writing and editing experience.

    Day to Day

    • Employees must abide by all Joint Commission requirements including, but not limited to, sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patients' rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.
    • Write, develop, copy, and edit patient education content for Stanford Health Care with an emphasis on health literacy strategies.
    • Guide the writing and content creation process, bringing projects from concept to completion and ensuring brief requirements and deadlines are met.
    • Collaborate with clinical team throughout Stanford Health Care settings to assess and manage patient education requests.
    • Ensure consistency of messaging and tone across all channels and touchpoints.
    • Lead initiatives to update and enhance existing content.
    • Mentor and support other writers, including providing guidance and direction to freelance writers and outside content vendors.
    • Contribute solutions based on a solid understanding of best practices in health patient education, including how to structure and optimize content.
    • Leverage research, insights, data and relevant trends to inform writing best practices and copy guidelines.
    • Present creative and content choices confidently and have a point of view on best overall presentation and delivery of content.
    • Manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
    • Build consensus and work effectively with all cross-functional team members, driving collaboration and continual improvement.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Experience in translating complex medical information into plain language for patient information.
    • Proven excellence in writing and editing.
    • Thoughtful and strategic approach to problem solving
    • Exceptional attention to editorial detail.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects on short deadlines.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, and ability to give and receive constructive editorial feedback.
    • Understanding of content strategy and content management systems.
    • Comfortable operating independently and collaboratively.
    • Strong portfolio indicating versatility with examples of various forms of writing and approaches.
