    Description

    The Director of Safety is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the company's comprehensive safety, health, and environmental (HSE) programs across all commercial construction projects. This role provides strategic leadership to ensure regulatory compliance, reduce risk, promote a strong safety culture, and protect employees, subcontractors, clients, and the public.

    Organizational Relationships


    Reports to: President/CEO

    Directly Supervises: Company or third-party Safety Inspectors

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Safety Leadership & Strategy

    • Develop and lead the company-wide safety vision, policies, and procedures aligned with OSHA, local, state, and federal regulations.
    • Establish measurable safety goals, KPIs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Serve as the primary safety advisor to executive leadership and project teams.

    Program Development & Implementation

    • Develop, implement, and continuously improve safety programs that address evolving jobsite risks, regulatory obligations, and operational needs across all projects.
    • Ensure site-specific safety plans are developed and enforced for all projects.
    • Lead incident prevention strategies and behavior-based safety programs.

    Compliance & Risk Management

    • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards, local regulations, and client safety requirements.
    • Oversee jobsite safety audits, inspections, and corrective action tracking.
    • Lead incident, accident, and near-miss investigations; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective measures.
    • Manage OSHA inspections, citations, and correspondence.

    Training & Development

    • Develop and oversee safety training programs for employees, supervisors, and subcontractors.
    • Ensure onboarding safety orientation and ongoing refresher training are completed and documented.
    • Coach project leadership on safety accountability and best practices.

    Field Support & Engagement

    • Provide regular job site visits to support project teams and reinforce safety expectations.
    • Partner with superintendents and project managers to integrate safety into daily operations.
    • Promote a proactive, "safety-first" culture across all levels of the organization.

    Subcontractor & Client Coordination

    • Review and approve subcontractor safety programs and qualifications.
    • Monitor subcontractor compliance with company and project safety standards.
    • Participate in client safety meetings and represent the company in safety-related discussions.

    Reporting & Analytics

    • Track and analyze safety metrics such as TRIR, DART, EMR, and leading indicators.
    • Prepare and present safety performance reports to executive leadership.
    • Maintain accurate safety documentation and records.

    Emergency Response & Crisis Management

    • Develop and maintain emergency response plans for jobsites.
    • Lead response efforts for serious incidents and coordinate with emergency services when required.

    QUALIFICATIONS:


    Education & Certifications

    • Bachelor's degree in safety management, Occupational Health, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred).
    • OSHA 30 (minimum); OSHA 500/510, CSP, CHST, or equivalent certifications preferred.

    Experience

    • 8–12+ years of construction safety experience, with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role.
    • Extensive experience in commercial construction (e.g., healthcare, office, retail, industrial, or mixed-use projects).
    • Proven experience managing multi-site safety programs.
    • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and influencing skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with field personnel, executives, clients, and regulators.
    • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
    • Proficiency with safety management software and Microsoft Office.
