- Responsible for the preparation of laboratory animal specimens.
- Prepare tissue samples for diagnostic testing.
- Assists veterinarian in pathogen monitoring via the sentinel program.
- Observes animals and report signs of sickness to higher-level laboratory personnel and/or Veterinarian.
- Conducts routine pathogen screening/testing to confirm the effectiveness of current sterilization procedures.
- Oversees stocking and maintaining of inventory in surgical and laboratory areas.
- Oversees signage and records related to the use of chemical and biological hazards in the animal facility.
- Oversees disposal of chemical and biological hazards, or caging associated with such hazards.
- Oversees room-level sterilization procedures to maintain biosecurity.
- Perform routine husbandry and anima l care.
- Perform other related duties assigned.
- Completion of a twelve month training program in histological techniques under the supervision of a qualified pathologist will substitute for all of the required experience.
- Satisfactory completion of a one year program in medical laboratory technology at an accredited vocational-technical school will substitute for all of the required experience.
- College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in any one or a combination of these specialized fields: laboratory animal technology, laboratory animal science, animal science, biology, microbiology, chemistry, nursing, zoology, agricultural sciences, physics, bacteriology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology or renewable resources.
- An associate degree in medical technology or nursing will substitute for all of the required experience.
- A baccalaureate degree with twenty-four semester hours in bacteriology, biology, histological techniques, medical technology, immunology, urology, zoology, chemistry, histopathology, mycology, or microbiology or any combination of the above coursework will substitute for all of the required experience.
- Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science will substitute for all of the required experience.
