    South Dakota Mines (SDM) seeks applicants for the position of Athletics Director (AD) to oversee its NCAA Division II athletic program. The Athletics Director leads, strategically plans, administers, develops policy, and directs the NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic program. The AD establishes and maintains a competitive intercollegiate athletic program within an academic environment and strives to elevate the athletic program holistically and comprehensively. The AD also ensures that the athletic program remains committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities and creates a positive culture that promotes teamwork, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, equity and inclusion, and a culture of compliance. The Athletics Director is a direct report to the President and a member of the senior leadership team at SDM.

    Required Qualities:
    • A bachelor's degree and at least six years of experience, or an advanced degree and at least four years of experience. Progressively related experience in intercollegiate athletics that includes a minimum of three years leading and/or supervising the work of others.
    • Strong leadership skills with a proven record of leading a sport or sports programs, working with coaches, athletic staff, and student-athletes.
    • Garnering support for athletics both internally to the university and externally.
    • Successful experience in working with athletic boosters, fundraising and revenue generation.
    • Values academic integrity and high academic standards for student-athletes.
    • A high degree of proven success in an athletic environment with successful teams.
    • Experience in managing a sport budget or athletic division budget.
    • Understanding of NCAA governance, rules, and compliance requirements.
    • Experience in driving equity within athletics including Title IX.
    • Proven success as a visionary leader as an AD or Associate AD at a collegiate athletic program is a plus.
    Responsibilities:

    The Athletics Director is responsible for the overall vision, direction, leadership, and management of NCAA Division II athletics program with 11 sports and approximately 315 student-athletes. The Athletics Director is responsible for the following:
    • Provide visionary leadership, strategic planning, and policy development for the athletics program; maintains a program that is committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities.
    • Develop and manage a large, multi-sport budget.
    • Plan and oversee all athletic facilities and fields including maintenance, renovation, and construction of new facilities.
    • Oversee operations of a Wellness Center, housed within the King Center facility.
    • Oversee department organization, personnel, policies and procedures, management of buildings, including the King Center, space, and equipment assigned to the athletic department.
    • Supervise and evaluate head coaches.
    • Provide proactive leadership in fundraising and revenue development.
    • Approve scheduling of all conference and non-conference intercollegiate events.
    • Enforce all NCAA and conference rules and regulations as well as Title IX compliance.
    • Oversee recruitment, scholarship utilization, travel, staff development, and other support activities to ensure competitive athletic teams and to ensure students enjoy a successful athletic career.
    • Oversee development of long-term strategic and facilities planning.
    • Represent the athletic department and South Dakota Mines to external constituents, furthering the University's public interests.
    • Participate in the athletic director meetings of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
    • Ability to work effectively with the media, University administrative leadership, Foundation, and other constituents affecting the athletic program.
