    Nature of Work

    Do you have experience in customer service and as a cashier? Join the City of Bellingham's team at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center today We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time Aquatic Center Main Cashier.

    The Aquatic Center Main Cashier collects admissions; processes purchase of passes and class registrations; answers questions regarding hours, class schedules and fees; greets customers and provides information regarding facilities and programs.

    Leads staff training on cashier functions, policies and procedures for the Aquatic Center and provides day-to-day oversight of the work of regular, non-benefited Cashiers.

    This position will start at Step 1 ($19.30/hour).

    Employees receive step increases annually in accordance with the Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees, Local 1937 Collective Bargaining Agreement and City policy.

    The full hourly range for this position is $ $23.78. For internal candidates, placement within the range is based on City Pay Placement Procedures.
    City of Bellingham employees receive medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as life insurance and long-term disability. All eligible City employees are enrolled in a Washington State Department of Retirement Systems pension plan.     Employees will receive 12 paid holidays in addition to one paid floating holiday each year.

    Employees accrue 8 hours total of contract and state sick leave per month in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and Washington State Law.

    At the time of hire, employees will accrue 7.33 hours of vacation per month. Vacation accruals increase based on years of service.

    Leave accruals are based on 1.0 FTE, accruals are pro-rated if part-time and require employee to be in paid status at least 120 hours/month.

    The Aquatic Center Main Cashier is distinguished from the non-regular Aquatic Center Cashier positions by having the additional responsibility of providing day-to-day oversight of the work of regular non-benefited Cashiers, conducting staff training and assisting the Aquatics Manager with accounts receivable and payable


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    Collects admissions using computer program; processes purchase of passes and class registrations.
    Maintains cash drawer, handling of cash exchange with patrons and reconciliation closeout.

    Greets patrons as primary receptionist; provides information regarding admission fees, private rentals and class schedules/fees, private lessons, and any other information regarding events taking place at the Aquatic Center.

    Books facility registrations for classes, private lessons and pass sales, and reservations for rentals.
    Assists Aquatics Manager with Accounts Receivable and Program Registration Software Organization and Customer Accounts. Makes corrections and updates as needed.
    Assists Parks Accounting Clerk with accounts payable and daily deposit/reconciliation procedures. Makes corrections as needed.
    Maintains wait list on existing or future programs offered and works to market and fill courses.
    Answers telephones and takes or routes messages to appropriate staff. May sort and route incoming mail and prepare outgoing mail.

    Leads staff training on cashier functions, policies and procedures for Aquatic Center and provides day-to-day work direction to regular non-benefited Cashiers.

    Maintains lost-and-found including laundering, sorting and care of claimed or found items.
    Lead staff member responsible for pool opening and/or closing procedures, starting cash register and logging onto registration program.

    ADDITIONAL WORK PERFORMED:
    Performs related duties as assigned, including basic general office work such as typing, filing or faxing tasks.
    Performs data entry into computerized registration program.
    Assists with facility emergencies, first aid, CPR, crowd control and clean-up.
    Monitors restroom and locker room facilities; performs minor cleaning and restocking of paper supplies.
    During emergency weather conditions, may assist with snow removal or sanding to ensure safe patron access to pool facilities.
    Attends in-service and program staff meetings providing minutes for meetings.
    May be assigned special projects.
    Performs other related duties of a similar nature or level.

    Physical ability to perform required duties including:
    sitting or standing for long periods of time;
    visual acuity to read a computer screen and a typeset page;
    fine finger dexterity to operate a cash register and computer keyboard and mouse, etc;
    occasionally lift up to 30 pounds for office supplies and snow/sanding duties.


    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
    Work is generally performed in an office environment, with frequent interaction with the public in person and by telephone. Requires some walking on wet or slick surfaces around pool area and some lifting of heavy supplies and materials.

    Experience and Training

    One year of experience as a cashier or related experience handling money required.
    One year of receptionist or customer service experience required.
    Demonstrated experience working with computer registration systems such as or similar required.
    Office/clerical experience performing tasks such as filing, answering phone, data entry/retrieval preferred.

    Necessary Special Requirements

    Employment contingent upon passing a criminal convictions check and child and vulnerable adult abuse records check (See Fair Hiring Practices).

    Obtain and maintain a first aid and CPR Certification within 3 months of hire.
    Willingness and ability to work flexible and/or additional hours which may include evenings, weekends and holidays.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Applicants must provide specific, detailed information so an initial determination can be made regarding your level of qualifications for this position.

    Experience and Training Rating:
    Applicants that meet minimum qualifications will go through an Experience and Training Rating. Relevancy of your experience and training, together with composition, grammar, spelling and punctuation will be considered when evaluating responses. Applicant status will be updated on or around May 2, 2024.

    The top eight (8) scoring applicants from the Experience and Training Rating will be invited to participate in an Oral Board Interview, tentatively scheduled for May 9, 2024.

    Candidates must achieve at least 60% passing score on the Oral Board Interview to be placed on the eligibility list.

    Applicants will be notified via email of Final Scores & Ranks.

    The final ranking of the register will be based on total scores for the following:
    Experience and Training Review (30%) and Oral Board Interview (70%).
    Final candidates will be referred to the department for additional examination, assessment, or test.

    This recruitment process will create a Civil Service eligibility register that will be used to fill current and future vacancies as they become available.
