    Overview


    The Oncology Infusion RN is a licensed professional who provides evidence-based care to adult and geriatric patients receiving various types of treatments for cancer including chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The Infusion RN works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide patient centered care utilizing knowledge of infusion therapy practices, oncology and critical thinking skills. Responsibilities are to demonstrate technical competence, professional and clinical judgement and communication skills, to perform appropriate patient assessments, review lab parameters, provided education and support, administer infusion therapies and obtain and maintain appropriate venous access. The Infusion RN is expected to participate in continuous learning and staying abreast of the latest evidence-based practices and infusion therapies.

    Responsibilities

    • Performs nursing assessment and identifies changes in patient status by recognizing signs/symptoms of adverse reactions and side effects. Communicates pertinent information concerning treatment and any treatment related side effects. Obtains medication reconciliation with every patient encounter. Makes appropriate recommendations based on oncology knowledge, policies/procedures, protocols, standards and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. Obtains physician orders, provides nursing care, documents assessments, provides patient education regarding all modalities of infusion treatment and potential side effects.
    • Exhibits high level of critical thinking skills.
    • Reviews and identifies abnormal lab values and other diagnostic tests appropriately and communicates to appropriate provider.
    • Provides infusion therapy based on evidence-based recommendations using a holistic patient centered approach.
    • Reviews and verifies appropriate parameters before initiating treatment. Performs calculations of ANC, BSA and dosage following established policies and procedures.
    • Possess in depth knowledge of medical oncology and/or hematologic cancers as well as blood and marrow transplantation treatment regimens and disease process. Nursing knowledge should include but not limited to; infusion therapy, chemotherapy/biotherapy, immunotherapy, blood transfusion, transfusion reactions, adverse reactions, oncologic emergencies, standard and high dose chemotherapies, and management/administration requirements of regimens.
    • Administer chemotherapy proficiently by all routes (IV, SQ, IM, IP, Central line, Peripheral and PO) in accordance with the Oncology Nursing Society guidelines in addition to other standards (ASCO, INS, OSHA, NIOSH and NCCN). Monitor patient for adverse reactions and provide appropriate treatment.
    • Administer blood and blood products proficiently according to policies and procedures and monitor patient for adverse reactions and provide appropriate treatment.
    • Demonstrates competency with patient care including specialty procedures such as but not limited to; hepatic artery pump fills, therapeutic phlebotomy, assist with omaya reservoir procedures, assist with bone marrow biopsy/aspiration, Intraperitoneal chemotherapy, hypersensitivity reaction, anaphylaxis, oncologic emergencies, chemo spills and neutropenic patients.
    • Demonstrate competency in establishing and maintaining venous access, peripheral IVs, mediports, power ports, dual ports, intraperitoneal ports, Hickman, and other central lines. Provides assistance as needed to assist patients to make informed decision regarding selection of VAD.Performs other duties as assigned to help the facility, department and patient within the realm of competency and scope of practice.
    • Maintains annual competencies
    • Continuous professional growth as demonstrated by: maintain professional certification in Oncology, maintain chemotherapy provider card, attends and participates in local, regional and national conferences and disseminates information to peers. Participates in community activities and cancer center projects and initiatives.
    • Evaluate outcomes by continuously monitoring patient goals and progression toward achievement of goals.
    • Participates in quality and patient safety/experience and performance improvement initiatives. Participates in various committees representing the Cancer Center. Participates in preparation for various accreditation surveys such as FACT, Joint Commission, NAPBC.
    • Functions independently and provides care based on knowledge, established standards of care, policies and procedures and exhibits high level of critical thinking. Supervises and delegates to all unlicensed personnel efficiently and appropriately within the treatment area to guide patient care.
    • Provide holistic care for the patient through the life span.
    • Serve as a resource for patients and make appropriate referrals to community support services and resources and collaborate with LCSW and Nurse Navigators to ensure all patients needs are met.
    • Provide education and materials to patients/families specific for treatment and side effects. Adjust teaching style to meet the needs of the patient and family. Document all education.
    • Oversee the flow of the treatment area and ensure patients are seen in a timely manner and to address any patient issues/concerns and follow up treatments scheduled.
    • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team including clinical trials to ensure compliance with all treatment requirements and procedures. Ensure that appropriate documentation is completed and reports changes in patient condition/adverse event to appropriate provider.

    Qualifications


    Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

    Graduate of an accredited/approved school of nursing.

    BSN preferred, must obtain or enroll within 2 years of hire.

    Current unrestricted Kentucky license

    BLS required.

    ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider card required.

    OCN preferred, must obtain within 2 years of hire.

    Experience (required and preferred):

    2 years oncology patient care experience preferred.
