    DescriptionThe Cardiac First Assist position is part of the cardiac group, providing first assist services to patients system wide. Cardiac experience is highly preferred. Travel to/from CMC and other locations to provide case coverage is expected. RNFA, PA or SA will be considered.

    The Cardiac First Assist works under the direction and supervision of the attending physician to provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.

    Performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate the needs of the surgical patient during the perioperative period. The First Assist I will 1st and or 2nd assist cardiac surgical procedures.

    The First Assist will cover regional call to support the Cardiac Surgery program across the system as well as covering call for Transplant, both donor and recipient, which requires the ability to travel in cars, ambulances, planes and helicopters.

    Displays knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body while delivering safe patient care. Establishes and maintains a safe peri operative environment.

    Offers education development opportunities to nursing staff, students and any other appropriate persons in the specific surgery and patient management.

    Utilizes ongoing data collection peri operatively, and follow up information to aid in research care studies that promote effectiveness and quality of patient care.


    Qualifications
    Education/Expertise:

    Surgical Assistant-Graduation of approved SA Program (10 years recent experience in first assisting in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic procedures will be accepted in lieu of formal SA education)

    -or
    • RNFA-Graduation of approved RN Program.
    Completion of state approved RNFA course.

    -or
    • Physician Assistant-Graduation of approved PA Program.
    Required Credentials, Licensure or Certification (i.e.

    RN, RRT):

    Surgical Assistants-Current National Certification (10 years' recent experience in first assisting in cardiovascular and cardiothoracic procedures will be accepted in lieu of certification)

    -or
    • RNFA-Current Ohio RN licensure (ACLS desired); CNOR certification (CRNFA desired); RNFA registration with OBN

    -or
    • Physician Assist must possess license from Ohio State Medical Board
    Experience & Knowledge:

    • Experienced cardiac assistants only
    • Must demonstrate proficiency in taking Second Call within 90 days
    Preferred Qualifications:

    • 2 years of Cardiac surgery experience as a Level 1
    • Proficiency in taking First Call
    • 6 months taking Second call for Cardiac Surgery service line
    • Proficient in endoscopic vein harvesting
    • Radial Artery Harvesting preferred
