    Job Summary/Basic Function

    About the Role:


    The Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing all financial activities of Lamar University, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and policies, and providing strategic financial guidance to senior leadership.

    This position reports to the Associate VP, Finance & Controller and supervises the Finance Department staff.
    What You'll Do – Position Duties

    • Financial Planning and Analysis:
    Coordinate the development of annual budgets, financial forecasts, and long-term financial plans. Analyze financial data to provide insights and recommendations to senior leadership. 25%

    • Financial Reporting:
    Prepare and distribute accurate and timely financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ( GAAP ) and other reporting requirements. 20%

    • Compliance and Risk Management:
    Monitor compliance with relevant regulations, policies, and procedures. Identify and mitigate financial risks. Coordinate internal and external audits. 15%

    • Financial Operations:
    Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and procurement. Implement best practices to improve efficiency and effectiveness. 20%

    • Supports organization financial objectives by providing financial analyses and recommendations and directing accounting and property management staff. 10%
    • Develops accounting organizational strategies by contributing accounting and financial information, analysis, and recommendations for strategic thinking and direction, and establishing functional objectives in line with organizational objectives. 5%
    • Helps to establish accounting operational strategies by evaluating trends, determining production, productivity, quality, and customer-service strategies, and resolving problems. 5%
    • Monitors appropriations in the state treasury and makes recommendations regarding use and management of those funds. 3%
    • Helps maintain compliance with pronouncements from the Governmental Accounting Standards Board ( GASB ) and federal and state tax laws. 2%

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in accounting & finance.
    • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience, preferably in higher education or a large organization.
    • Strong understanding of financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Proficiency in financial management software and Microsoft Office Suite.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • CPA or other relevant professional certification.
    • Experience with governmental financial management systems.
    • Knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations governing higher education finance.
