    Cooperative Development Services - Executive Director (ED)

    The Board of Directors (Board) of Cooperative Development Services (CDS) and its 501(c)3 Cooperative Development Fund of CDS (the Fund) invites applications from qualified leaders for the position of Executive Director, due to a planned retirement.

    The Board has selected Dairyland Power Cooperative to facilitate the search process.


    Cooperative Development Services (CDS) is a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization with a mission to start and grow cooperatives in multiple sectors, primarily in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa with limited work beyond this region.

    The Fund is registered to accept tax-deductible donations for its clients in all states and helps co-ops reach their respective fundraising goals and expand their presence within their communities.

    CDS participates in the development, restructuring, and expansion of cooperative organizations in multiple sectors.

    CDS provides consulting on a fee-for-service basis and is successful in helping clients secure grant funding from the USDA Rural Co-op Development Grant (RCDG) and other public and private sources to buy down the cost of our work.

    The Executive Director is responsible for executing the organization's mission to start and grow cooperatives in multiple sectors. The incumbent is accountable to the Board and is responsible for the overall performance of CDS to include


    leadership and management functions of planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, and running the activities of CDS in accordance with policies, long-range plans and business objectives delegated by the CDS Board.

    The Impact You'll Make in this Role
    As the Executive Director, you will have the opportunity to further cultivate the CDS cooperative culture by:


    Collaborating with the Board of Directors to develop, implement and communicate a comprehensive strategic plan with clear, measurable goals and objectives.

    Ensuring those strategies are guiding programs and progress is reported to the Board on executing mission-driven work.

    Providing strong leadership, vision, team building, communication, coaching and assistance to the staff of CDS and the Board concerning strategic planning, industry changes, business objectives and policy needs that support CDS's mission and provide guidance for overall operations.

    Leading and empowering team members to attain objectives, while implementing policies and business plans in support of CDS's strategic plan and mission and establishing effective criteria to guide and measure performance.

    Fundraising for revenue generation, and managing overall organizational obligations for the combination of earned (fee-for-service) revenue and grant funded deliverables to support programs and clients.

    Working effectively with the CDS Board of Directors possessing a collaborative, team-oriented approach to governance and reporting key and valuable information timely and appropriately.

    Developing new programs and non-profit entrepreneurial abilities; recognizing and developing opportunities for programs, determining an actionable path, finding initial funding to support testing, implementing, and growing to scale.

    Representing CDS in interactions with the local community, media, other cooperatives, elected and government officials and the public.

    Your Skills and Expertise
    To set you up for success in this role, CDS requires, at a minimum, the following qualifications:

    Bachelor's Degree or higher in Finance, Business Management, Community/Economic Development, or related field. Minimum of three (3)

    years of leadership/management experience
    Previous grant writing experience strongly preferred.
    Highest levels of ethics, authenticity, and integrity.
    Superior communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with individuals at all levels, both internally and externally
    Professional business acumen with strong management and visionary leadership skills
    Exemplification of cooperative business model and values
    Demonstrated strategic thinking, planning, problem-solving, conflict management and resolution skills
