    Job Duties

    This position is only open to current employees of Western State Hospital.


    Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Judicial Clerk to provide and coordinate all clerical support activities and office support duties for the Judicial Hearing process at Western State Hospital (WSH).

    This position will be responsible for the coordination of the Hospital Judicial Teams, Special Justices, Attorneys, and Independent Evaluators; schedule all hearings for commitments and treatment over objections to WSH patients; serve as Notary Public in notarizing all necessary judicial paperwork; prepare and distribute hearing lists each day; conduct hearings; and data entry.


    This position will also schedule all pre-screenings, hearings, treatment over objections, and appeals; coordinate pre-screenings; assure patient safety and confidentiality during the commitment and prescreening process; manage day to day clerical duties for the Judicial Team and commitment process; enter legal info, including treatment over objection information into AVATAR and EMR; and attend scheduled Department meetings and meetings with supervisor.

    Minimum Qualifications

    * high school diploma or equivalent
    * extensive experience in a hospital setting, legal system, medical office, or combination
    * eligible for CPR, Therapeutic Options, and Notary Certification
    * knowledge of clerical processes/equipment within a hospital setting and how Community Mental Health (CSB's, Providers) interfaces with the hospital
    * skilled in the use of computers (Microsoft Office-Excel and Word, AVATAR, EMR) including teleconferencing, and other office related equipment
    * ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks to meet shifting demands under sometimes stressful situations
    * knowledge of commitment process and Virginia statutes that relate to this process
