    POSITION:
    Elementary Assistant Principal

    SCHEDULE:

    LOCATION:
    Sunset Elementary, 12824 W. 12th, Airway Heights, WA 99001

    SUPERVISOR:
    Building Principal; Superintendent

    POSITION TYPE:
    Certificated Administrator

    COMPENSATION:
    $121,000-$142,780 depending on comparable experience; supplemental compensation for PhD/EdD, and annual reimbursement for professional growth. Pay is annualized over 12 months (if hired after July, spread over remaining months of contract year (Jul-Jun))
    Master's Degree in Educational Administration or related field.
    Current Washington State Principal Certificate and/or Professional Administrator certificate.

    Five or more years of teaching and/or administrative experience at the elementary level, experience in culturally and economically complex communities preferred.

    (P)K-5 teaching experience preferred.
    Successful leadership experience as an elementary school administrator or comparable administrative/supervisory responsibility preferred.
    Valid Washington State Drivers License; WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance

    GENERAL INFORMATION:
    Cheney Public Schools is a rapidly growing district serving approximately 5,200 students in the southwest region of Spokane County.

    The district covers 380 square miles, encompassing the towns of Airway Heights, Cheney, an expansive rural area, and a developing industrial and residential area on the West Plains.

    The district currently has 11 schools: 5 comprehensive elementary schools:
    Betz, Salnave, Snowdon, Sunset, and Windsor; two comprehensive middle schools: Cheney Middle School and Westwood Middle School; one comprehensive high school: Cheney High School, and three learning options schools: a K-8

    HomeWorks, a 6-12 blended learning school: WIN Academy, and Three Springs High School.

    grade, Sunset has been a vibrant part of the Airway Heights community since 1951. Most recently renovated in , Sunset is a well-maintained, modern school located in the center of Airway Heights.

    Sunset is a dynamic learning community with a diverse pre-k through 5th grade student population that includes multiple student support services programs, and the highest percentage of racially diverse students and multilingual learners of all our elementary schools.

    Sunset has an active and supportive PTO and promotes parent and community involvement via partnership with the Airway Heights Parks and Recreation Department and Communities in Schools of Spokane County.

    The school building is frequently utilized for community events and serves as an important hub for the community of Airway Heights.

    This school has a rich community context that requires a leader able to meet varying needs and high impact outcomes for each student to thrive.

    The team at Sunset is committed to their students and families and works very hard to create a positive learning environment and to assure high levels of achievement for all students.

    The school is currently served by a full-time principal, assistant principal (this AP position will make two full-time assistant principals); dedicated teachers at each grade level; a full-time counselor; K-5 specialists for music, library media, and health and fitness instruction; and academic interventionists to support students with more intensive academic needs.

    The assistant principal at Sunset will assist the principal in leading their building guiding coalition to establish meaningful school improvement goals and carry out the authentic work of PLCs throughout our school district.

    It is imperative the assistant principal is able to coordinate highly effective systems and procedures, and use a collaborative approach that is inclusive of key stakeholders to establish goals and see through continual improvements.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


    Provide exceptional instructional leadership to a community of dedicated and collaborative educators who are committed to ensuring that all children achieve success in school and life.

    Possess a passion for teaching and learning, a depth of knowledge of (P)K-5 curriculum, and a thorough understanding of instructional and intervention practices that support diverse learner contexts and learning approaches in support of the success of all students.

    Ability to call upon previous leadership experiences and best practices in dynamic school communities with various student populations, languages, cultural backgrounds, and socioeconomic conditions.

    Demonstrate a high level of performance as a leader.

    Clearly communicate expectations to staff, provide support for staff to enhance their performance, and hold staff members accountable for achieving building and district goals.

    Demonstrate excellent personal relationship skills.

    Demonstrate experience designing and implementing a school improvement plan using a collaborative process; one that establishes achievable goals which are responsive to state and federal guidelines while placing student interests at the center of decisions.

    Possess high energy and demonstrate enthusiasm for leading staff during this time of increased enrollment and pressure on common spaces and scheduling.

    Demonstrate creative thinking and problem solving to maintain high quality teaching and learning for all disciplines and programs: inclusionary preschool, full time kindergarten, special education, music, PE, and media at the school site.

    Demonstrate knowledge of culturally competent curriculum, assessment, and organizational development with an emphasis on grades PK-5, including transition from PK-Kinder and elementary to middle school.

    Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment by implementing culturally relevant, effective and positive methods of student behavior support in compliance with state laws and district policies.

    Demonstrate knowledge of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and the Four Questions that guide our collaborative work.
    Assist in leadership of efforts to provide equal opportunities to all staff and students.
    Support and implement a positive school climate based on the principles of school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

    Demonstrate skill in staff leadership and group facilitation, including the ability to assess classroom instruction and to work effectively with teachers and support staff to improve instruction and classroom management with dynamic learners.

    Assist in leading a school culture where students, parents, classified staff, and certified staff value all people: people of diverse backgrounds, people of diverse economic situations, and people of diverse cultural groups; value each member's contribution to the school community.

    Demonstrate knowledge of legal and state requirements pertinent to elementary school programs.
    Demonstrate team-building skills, excellent communication, time-management, organization skills, and the ability to use technology to work efficiently.
    Assist with school-day supervision, bus supervision, and nighttime activities as assigned.
    Assist the principal with developing communications/publications.
    Participate in screening, selection, training, assignment, and reassignment of school staff.
    Maintain visibility in classrooms, hallways, and common areas during the school day and at school events.
    Assist with the IEP process as needed to support our Special Education Program.
    Provide leadership for activities during and outside the school day.
    Provide support for parent conferences and other building-wide events.
    Assist with coordination of substitutes and student teacher placement.
    Evaluate certified and classified staff.
    Administer policies and regulations following state and federal program mandates.
    Strengthen business partnerships and PTO, as well as assist with increasing parent and community involvement.
    Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Master's degree in Educational Administration or related field.
    Washington State Principal Certificate and/or Professional Administrator Certificate.

    Five or more years of teaching and/or administrative experience at the elementary level, experience in culturally and economically complex communities preferred.

    (P)K-5 teaching experience preferred.
    Instructional leadership experiences as an assistant principal, principal assistant, instructional coach, department coordinator, or similar role preferred.
    Willingness and flexibility to be present at a wide variety of school events and activities throughout the year.

    CONTRACT:
    212 day contract year; job responsibilities will commence on or about July 1, 2024.
