    Advance your career as an Assistant Engineer (Electrical or Control Systems) with East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), an industry-leading water and wastewater utility.

    EBMUD's water system is over 100 miles long, starting in the Sierra Foothills to the East San Francisco Bay.

    The current vacancy is in the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Engineering section in EBMUD's Maintenance & Construction Department.

    The SCADA Engineering Section is responsible for the water operations information system including maintenance, improvements, and enhancements of the EBMUD industrial control system (ICS).

    As appropriate to the assignment, the ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in:


    • Control Systems and Instrumentation Systems including SCADA, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), distributed control systems (DCS), Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs).
    • Wireless network support including radio path studies (develop software model, survey radio path on site, and write report to summarize findings). In addition, support radio installations and replacement for capital and maintenance projects.
    • Information Technology (IT) and networking such as network infrastructure (wireless data communication, network routers, switches, firewalls), software applications, and hardware (servers and workstations).
    • Managing/supporting process control projects for water operation facilities. Responsibilities may include planning, design, construction support, commissioning, and maintenance.
    • Written communication to prepare concise and accurate engineering reports, correspondence, and memos for a wide variety of audiences including EBMUD staff, government and regulatory agencies, contractors, and the general public.

    The salary range for Assistant Engineer (Electrical or Control Systems) is $10,846 per month increasing to $11,388, $11,957, $12,555, and $13,183 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

    Any combination of education and experience that has led to the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and abilities indicated above.

    Typical means of acquiring the essential knowledge, skills and abilities is a combination of training and experience equivalent to:


    • A bachelor's degree in an ABET-accredited electrical or control systems engineering curriculum OR a California EIT Certificate;
    • Two years of engineering experience (subsequent to obtaining the degree) at a level comparable to, or higher than EBMUD's Junior Engineer classification. An advanced degree in an accredited electrical or closely related engineering curriculum may be substituted for one of the required years of experience.
    A computer engineering degree and/or related coursework may be considered.
    Must possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record. Must be willing to work overtime when needed.

    Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the position including both office and field duties.

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

    The Selection Process

    • Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
    • All qualified applications and supplemental question responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications invited to a hiring interview.
    • Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill current regular vacancies, as well as others, occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
    • The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
    • All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
