    AVLF seeks applicants for the full-time position of Director of the nationally-recognized Standing With Our NeighborsTM (SWON) Program in Atlanta, Georgia. Standing With Our Neighbors is a placed-based legal services program that places attorneys directly in select Atlanta Public Schools (APS) and communities for greater access to housing legal help in areas of unlawful eviction, poor living conditions, and similar dire housing legal matters. SWON aims to preserve tenants' housing, improve resident health and living conditions, reduce student enrollment turnover, and overall help families, schools, and communities thrive. This Director position oversees all the work of SWON, which currently operates within the APS Carver Cluster, Atlanta's Westside neighborhoods (e.g., Vine City, English Avenue, Atlanta's West End, and the NPU-V neighborhoods (e.g., Peoplestown, Mechanicsville, Pittsburgh).

    In this role, the Director manages the relationships between AVLF and APS schools, community partners, law firms, and volunteers. The Director also provides support and training to staff attorneys and community advocates related to their duties in the SWON Program. As a managerial role, the Director manages administrative-level matters, including approving staff time off requests and reimbursement requests, assigning and delegating tasks, leading team meetings, setting and achieving team goals, implementation of the AVLF's strategic plan, and similar tasks assigned by the Executive Director and/or Deputy Director. When desired or necessary, the role also includes advocacy, litigation, and providing direct legal help to tenants.

    The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to advocating for tenants alongside community organizations to fight wrongful evictions and poor living conditions, as well as a desire to innovate to change thew way legal services are delivered.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Leadership and Direction

    • Set and track team goals for SWON to ensure progress and measure impact of legal services
    • Set a vision for the type of impact SWON aims to make in the short and long term
    • Promote team morale and momentum for achieving team goals and our general justice-oriented work

    Legal Skills

    • Represent tenants in judicial proceedings when appropriate and necessary
    • Support and assist staff attorneys and volunteers in representing tenants in court or in pretrial matters (e.g., answering a dispossessory filing, filing motions to set aside judgments, providing legal advice, etc.)
    • Aid staff attorneys in screening legal matters for merit and placement with volunteers or staff attorneys

    Administration, Management, and Support

    • Supervise and manage the work of 10+ employees, with 4 direct reports (3 staff attorneys and a community advocate manager), including training, quality control, providing feedback, delegating, and support
    • Manage official partnerships of schools and outside organizations with SSH/SWON (e.g., MOUs, joint events, etc.)
    • Build and maintain relationships with law firms and volunteers, including providing support and training to volunteers providing pro bono legal help to tenants.
    • Directly support staff attorneys in executing community "Know Your Rights" programs and legal clinics
    • Serving on community housing-related boards and as a member of organizations or coalitions relevant to the work of the SSH team and/or AVLF
    • Serve as a member of AVLF's executive leadership team, participating in directors meetings, providing input and helping make leadership-level decisions for the organization, and communicating with other organizational leaders regarding SSH needs and roles
    • Communicate budget and resource needs of SWON and track budget expenses and resource allocations
    • Approve staff time off requests, reimbursements, tenant financial assistance and invoice payments
    • Coordinate team's involvement in grant applications, reporting, and compliance
    • Initiate/oversee HR-related matters (e.g., performance evaluations and feedback, promotions, interviewing and hiring, onboarding, staff concerns)

    Director Requirements:

    • JD degree and a license to practice law in Georgia, with a minimum ten (10) years of relevant legal experience.
    • Prior litigation experience representing tenants, defending against cases and bringing affirmative cases, including negotiating solutions with opposing parties.
    • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and legal services to low-income individuals and/or communities, whether through pro bono work or otherwise
    • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, including experience and comfort with public speaking. Proficiency or fluency in Spanish is not required but will be strongly preferred.
    • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and analytical legal skills. Experience with volunteer management.
    • Works great in teams – will be working with families, volunteers, employees, and more.
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and problem-solve in a demanding and changing environment
    • Proficient in Adobe, Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel is a plus

    Benefits

    AVLF provides generous fringe benefits, including paid holidays, significant time off including parental leave; health insurance, short and long-term disability insurance; option to participate in healthcare FSA and dependent care FSA, law school loan reimbursement up to $500 per month (after 3-month waiting period and subject to additional terms) 401k with 5% contributed by AVLF regardless of employee contribution and Georgia Bar dues and CLE expenses.

    Working Conditions:

    Fast-paced hybrid environment with work requiring multi-tasking, prioritizing, and strong communication skills. May spend time traveling to and from meetings with clients, community partners, and the AVLF office. There may also be required bending and prolonged sitting and/or standing.
