    About the Facility - Minneapolis VAMC
    Minneapolis VA Medical Center is one of the VA's four polytrauma medical centers to care for active-duty service members and Veterans with brain injuries, who are blind, or have had an amputation and maintains a 65,000 square foot center to care for Veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders. In 2018, 1,289 volunteers donated 189,586 hours to help care for Veterans, the same year that was recorded 980,427 outpatient visits. The main campus provides primary care and specialty health services, including surgery, psychiatry, neurology, cancer treatment (oncology), dentistry, and more.

    Nuclear Medicine Technologist - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
    • The Nuclear Medicine Technologist prepares, assays, and administers radiopharmaceutical doses through injection, inhalation, or ingestion according to prescriptions.
    • They must proficiently introduce intravenous catheters in patients to administer radiopharmaceuticals and medications.
    • Test patients' blood glucose levels and respond appropriately to results outside the normal range.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of potential side effects of administered medications and take immediate action to address any observed effects.
    • Order and manage radiopharmaceutical doses for daily patient studies, ensuring an adequate supply to minimize delays. Welcome patients, explain procedures, answer questions, position patients, and ensure their comfort during procedures.
    • Obtain relevant clinical data from patients, electronic charts, requisitions, and interviews with patients and/or their families.
    • The Nuclear Medicine Technologist operates nuclear medicine equipment for various procedures, including SPECT, SPECT/CT, PET/CT, well counters, GM survey meters, and more.
    • Understand and perform exposure rate calculations accurately.
    • Perform a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures, including specialized computer-assisted studies.
    • Conduct hybrid imaging procedures such as SPECT/CT and PET/CT, ensuring attentiveness to CT safety and minimizing patient dose.
    • Analyze procedure images for quality and obtain additional images when necessary.
    • Administer radiopharmaceuticals to patients with strict adherence to quality management methods for patient identification.
    • Perform radionuclide therapy under the supervision of a Nuclear Medicine Physician, including receiving and assaying prescribed therapeutic doses.
    • Demonstrate understanding of personnel requiring film badges and recommend actions to reduce exposure levels.
    • Prepare studies for interpretation by Nuclear Medicine Physicians, ensuring completeness of all forms and recording relevant data.
    • Schedule patient procedures considering various factors such as camera availability, patient condition, urgency, and other appointments, while informing patients of necessary preparations and preventing over-booking and extended wait times.
    • The Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs technical procedures for the safe handling, transport, usage, and disposal of radioactive materials, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
    Nuclear Medicine Technologist - REQUIREMENTS
    • Certification: Must be board-certified in Nuclear Medicine Technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).
    • Education: Must have completion of an NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program, OR
      • Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Education programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB.
    • Experience: Must have one year minimum of experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.
