    Description

    Propagation Manager – Green Lake Nursery

    Green Lake Nursery is a producer of annual, perennials, and flowering shrubs for the Texas market. We are known for a wide selection of material. We propagate items for our internal use at our Dallas, and San Marcos locations. We buy in URC from the main suppliers in the industry. We hold stock and produce in-house items that are not commercially available. We are orientating our mix to include native and adaptable plants for our region.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Manage growing staff over propagation product

    · Build, manage, and evaluate propagation team
    · Oversee the application of water and fertilizer
    · Maintain proper feed requirements for plant growth
    · Evaluate IPM pest program
    · Run chemical applications of pesticides
    Collaborate with Head Grower
    · Evaluate finished crops for improvements
    · Collaborate changes for more efficient crop plans
    Oversee plant quality for propagation material
    · Evaluate physical needs for proper plant growth including cutting back, shaping, and trimming
    · Maintain working PGR program
    · Cleaning up crops for quality reasons
    · Sorting and culling crops
    Oversee safety and compliance with pesticide laws
    · Ensure employees are wearing proper PPE
    · All laws are being followed
    · Make sure all licenses are up to date
    · Proper labeling and record keeping are being done
    Collaborate with production department
    · Help with liner tray purchase decisions
    · Communicate schedule changes to appropriate department
    · Deliver material to production on scheduled time
    Manage changes in inventory for propagation material
    · Record losses
    · Change locations when plants are moved
    · Make adjustment to crops if different than labeled

    Manage stock program
    · Oversee inground and container stock program
    · Evaluate plans for cost effectiveness
    Evaluate quality of purchased plants
    · Determine value of young plants purchased
    · Communicate with vendors on issues
    · Advocate changes needed.
    Communicate with other departments as needed
    · Create maintenance requests
    · Advocate for projects to help in efficiencies
    · Communicate HR needs
    Continually develop and improve crop recipes
    · Maintain records on crop for uniformity
    · Advocate changes for future success
    · Oversee all young plant production
    · Manage supervisor(s), leads, and work crews
    · Manage in-house stock production for propagation including pot and inground plantings
    · Conduct R&D and trials for new plant additions
    · Coordinate crop adjustments with finish plant growers
    · Develop and maintain crop recipes
    · Communicate with internal plant coordinator, and outside suppliers
    · Implement new equipment in the greenhouse
    · Create SOP for the new house and equipment
    · Technical skills in managing environmental controls.
    · Understandings of misting relationship in callusing and root initiation in plants
    · Ability to communicate to all levels of an organization
    · Organization skills for stock programs
    · Knowledge of plant timing and scheduling

    REQUIREMENTS:

    · Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture or Agriculture related Major or commensurate propagation, grower or plant production experience
    · Experience/Knowledge: 5 years' experience in production
    · Certifications/Licenses/Registration: Pesticide Applicators License
    QUALIFICATIONS:

    · Strong understanding of crop cycles and grow times.

    · Strong leadership traits which include presentation and influencing skills.

    · Solid knowledge of irrigation management.

    · Experience and knowledge of plant nutrition.

    · Excellent interpersonal, communication and coaching skills; responsive and persuasive at all levels of the organization.

    · Excellent organizational/time management skills, prioritization, and multi-tasking abilities.

    · Strong analytical skills and critical thinking skills.

    · Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, and familiar with Teams.

    · Bilingual in Spanish/English is preferred.

    GREENHOUSE INFORMATION:

    · Propagation house dimension 270' by 120' with a 30' by 120' head house
    · First three bays 90' by 120' have more advanced controls. The rest is more traditional.
    · AdeptAg water boom for 90' by 120' of house
    · Retractable shade for 90' by 120' of the house
    · Pad and fan cooling on house with three levels of cooling
    · Forced air LB white and in ground boil loop for heating
    · IUNU crop tracking system
    · Priva greenhouse controller
