- Wound prevention and care
- Initiates IV Therapy as per policy/procedure, taking into consideration vein condition, patient age, skin condition, patient positioning, and cognition
- Monitors and maintains venous access
- Demonstrates care and maintenance of central venous access devices
- Demonstrates ability to perform 12 lead EKG's
- Capillary Blood Glucose Monitoring (CBGM)/Quality Control
- Provides respiratory support. (Pulse ox, suctioning, wall and portable oxygen therapy)
- Interprets cardiac rhythms and responds appropriately.
- Communicates with members of the healthcare team regarding patient's cardiac rhythm/status
- Ventilator Management/Weaning
- Maintains drainage tubes.
- Phlebotomy skills:
- Blood culture, T&C specimens, etc.
- Central venous access device
- Labeling of specimens
- Peripheral specimen collection
- Arterial Blood Gas sampling
- Maintenance of invasive hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, PA lines, A-lines)
- Comprehensive chart review
- Maintain adequate airway
- Demonstrates knowledge of Anesthetic agents.
- Monitors and evaluates post anesthesia patients.
- Recovers moderate sedation patient
- Monitors patient post procedure according to department policy until discharge by physician.
- Assesses and documents according to the aldrette score (activity, respirations, circulation, consciousness and O2 saturation)
- Recovers patients per hospital policy
- Moderate Sedation:
- Recognizes appropriate responses
- Monitors patient vital signs and maintains IV access as per policy
- Recognizes changes in patient's condition and responds appropriately
- Documents medications, vital signs, patient response and special instructions

- Phone interview provided on as needed basis
- Prepares all patient's charts prior to day of surgery assuring chart is complete
- Reviews all preadmission testing results and reports all abnormalities to anesthesiologist/and/or/surgeon and documents physician's response
- Reviews discharge instruction with patient and significant others
- Records patients level of satisfaction with care delivered in SPU via the post op follow up phone call relays any problems or concerns related to anesthesia or surgery to the anesthesiologist/and/or/attending
- Assist anesthesiologist with pain management injections; epidural, facet and nerve blocks
- Wound prevention and care

- Arterial and Venous stasis ulcer
- Surgical wounds

- Sets up equipment used and changes appropriately
- Replaces and restocks procedure cart
- Phlebotomy skills

- Peripheral specimen collection
- Labeling of specimens
- Requirements:
- 2 year critical care nursing experience with successful completion of an approved critical care course
- Completion of approved dysrhythmia course
- ACLS
- BLS
- BSN preferred
- Critical care and endoscopy experience required
