    Full time, 1.0 FTE Salary: M-9, $36.14 to $41.31 per hour, DOE The wage above reflects a 125% differential for market rate.

    Job Summary The Diesel Generator Mechanic Specialist is responsible for the maintenance of diesel generator systems within Anchorage School District facilities.

    The location of the work station is subject to contract language concerning shift location/bids. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off.

    Job Requirements The following are required:
    A high school diploma or equivalent.

    Must obtain an Alaska class B commercial driver's license with a general knowledge test endorsement within 6 months of hire.

    The following are preferred:
    Alaska Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification.

    A minimum of five years of experience within the past six years in heavy equipment, generator, and support equipment repair.

    A minimum of three years of experience within the past five years in power generation repair. Work experience must evidence ability to perform tasks assigned. Essential Job Functions Troubleshoots mechanical problems and defects on emergency generator engines and small engines such as compressors. Performs both minor and major mechanical repairs on emergency generators and small engines up to and including complete overhauls. Performs preventive maintenance tasks on emergency generators. Diagnoses and repairs starters, alternators, and generator electrical systems. Assists with maintenance of yard and shop. Performs control sequencing and interlocks. Operates three phase transfer switches for emergency and standby generators and makes necessary repairs or modifications. Performs diagnostics and repairs electrical systems, diesel fuel management systems, fluid analysis, starting and charging systems, and other electronics. Sets up load bank tester for gen-sets up to 1.5 MW. Coordinates the shutdown and restart process of generators with all interested parties.

    Maintains skills with tools, methods, and materials used for major overhaul of engines, tune-ups, fuel management, cooling systems and three phase power generation (480V and 208V).

    Ability to troubleshoot, analyze, and repair mechanical problems on diesel generators. Works without direct supervision within established safety procedures. Communicates directly with school principals. Writes reports as required and maintains records of parts and supplies. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others. Physical /Mental Demands The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required.

    The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs.

    Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure.

    The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
