    Overview

    Abacus Technology is seeking a Historian to conduct research and provide knowledge management for NASA in support of Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). This is a full-time, hybrid position requiring occasional visits to AFRC and JPL.

    Responsibilities

  • Work in consultation with the NASA Chief Historian.
  • Undertake original scholarly research and contribute to ongoing scholarship in the field of NASA history through the publication of books, articles, and reports.
  • Propose and author historical topics and subjects for digital media and online content including, but not limited to, features and articles, encyclopedic entries and updates, image galleries, image features, biographies, social media posts, and historical film and video.
  • Advise NASA Historians and Archivists on best practices with respect to publishing history content on .
  • Participate in History Office and Agency-wide meetings on historical issues including standing meetings, NASA History Program Reviews, teleconferences, and videoconferences.
  • Assist with the planning, organization, and participation in NASA History sponsored symposia, workshops, and conferences.
  • Work with local, regional, and Agency level stakeholders to determine and promote the effective use of history in internal decision-making and management, as well as in public communication and outreach.
  • Conduct professional oral history interviews with NASA leadership, employees, and program/project team members as appropriate.
  • Provide assistance to NASA employees, contract researchers, scholars, journalists, students, and others members of the public researching historical topics or specific reference questions.
  • Participate in the peer review process of relevant historical manuscripts and products, and provide comments on matters of fact and interpretation.
  • Ensure that historical research conducted under NASA auspices meets the highest scholarly standards in substance, process (including peer review), presentation, and historical methodologies.
  • Provide regular and detailed reports of work undertaken across the function.
  • Qualifications

    7 years experience in research and knowledge management. PhD in history or a related field. Proficient in oral and written communications; research, writing and editing; and problem solving. Must be a US citizen.
